One thing that most people never think will happen to them is have a car accident. Everyday, throughout the world, people are involved in minor accidents all the way up to fatal head-on collisions. Usually people don't think too much about it, until it happens to someone who they know, and then it becomes personal. Car accidents become a tragedy really quickly if someone dies or is serious hurt. It becomes an even bigger tragedy when the people killed are teenagers, knowing their lives have been cut short. There are ways to drive defensively, and avoid being in accidents. How many drivers, every time they get behind the wheel, consciously practice driving in a safe manner. Probably not many, because most people do not exactly have their minds on driving.

People are driving here and there running errands and trying to get children to where they need to be. There are way too many people talking on cell phones, who definitely are not giving the driving their full attention. Is it any wonder, with all of the multi-tasking going on in the society, and the busyness of peoples lives, that car accidents have been happening so often. If all drivers would make a choice to become a defensive driver, the number of accidents would more than likely decrease greatly. The number one way for a driver to avoid accidents, is to pay attention to what is going on. When you are driving, give up on the multi-tasking, and keep your eyes on what is happening in front of you.

When you are driving on busy roads, or at crowded intersections, make sure that your mind is on the driving, and your cell phone is turned off. If you absolutely must be using your cell phone, then get one of the new headphones that allow you to talk, and keep both hands on the wheel at the same time. The last thing you should be doing while driving is trying to read the newspaper, or a book. Unless it is when women are putting on makeup as they are driving. It would be interesting to know how many accidents are caused by people doing these very things. Think about the number of accidents that could be avoided if everyone eliminated all of these distractions while they were driving.

Along with being totally focused, another good way to prevent accidents, is to obey all of the traffic rules. When you are going the speed limit, there is a less likely chance you will get into an accident. There is a good chance that the majority of people getting into accidents were going to fast. How many people actually drive the speed limit?

Unfortunately, every time you get into a vehicle, you are an accident waiting to happen. Even if you drive defensively, don't drive too fast, and are watching everyone else, you still cannot control what happens with other drivers. There is always a risk when you are driving in a car. Certainly you can do your part by driving slower, and in a more defensive way.
