Manufacturers of all sizes and representing a wide range of industries are at all times looking at ways to cut costs and flatten operations, and one of the ways that they are doing this is by exploring the pros and cons of performing their digital printing and package wrapping in house. Digital printing, also known as flexo printing, corona treating, laminating, creating pressure sensitive labels, die-cutting, film seaming, slitting, UV coating, and printing shrink labels, is the process of getting images and print onto the surface of an item's exterior package.

Traditionally, all but the largest of manufacturers have opened these printing and wrapping services to bid and then contracted them out to others to perform. While this system has worked well for decades and decades and left the manufacturers free to do what they do best, manufacture, the truth is that in today's ultra-competitive environment of manufacturing, companies need to be open to all cost saving ideas in order to succeed.

This need is even more pronounced these days as business and manufacturing ever become more and more an international game that crosses borders at will. This is why more and more companies are doing their own wrapping and printing in house. Actually, if one considers how their own use of home printers have killed the local photo developing shop and the film camera industry, it should come as no surprise to anyone that this same thing should happen in the manufacturing world.

Technology is forever improving, growing smaller and becoming more efficient and more user friendly. This is what is allowing people to print their own snapshots at home, just as it is what is allowing manufacturers to print and wrap their own products in house. Of course, initially, many manufacturers will need to work hand-in-hand with a printing and shrink wrap consultant or company to make sure the printing and packaging system truly meets the needs of their company. However, with the proper guidance, there is no reason that some companies cannot do this service on their own.

Of course, none of this is to suggest that every company needs to do the digital printing and packaging on their own. Many business owners truly enjoy their core industry and have no desire to pick up additional chores to complete. Each manufacturing company owner needs to seriously consider all of his or her options to include those related to printing and packaging to make sure that his or her set up meets his or her unique needs.
