The value of social networking has become more evident. Every day we hear a news item or a media program that refers to Facebook or Twitter. Though not the only social media on the Internet these two media options are the fastest growing therefore the most popular.

Social media has become one of the fastest and most effective methods of increasing your business awareness.

This article I am going to give you some tips on using Facebook to promote and market your business.

The 1st thing you need to do is create a Facebook page for your business ensuring you use your business name for the page name. There is no cost to do this. Some small businesses have chosen only to use Facebook for their only online interface however, I recommend you use Facebook in tandem with a website. Doing this provides potentially more visibility in the search engines for your business.

Creating a Facebook page for your business is easy just follow the instructions provided on the site and you can have it created within minutes.

Once you have created your Facebook page then you need to encourage people to "like" your page. The more people who like your page the more chance you will have of getting a dedicated Facebook URL but the ultimate bonus is you will have more people you can market your products or services to.

I will assume you have a website therefore you will need to put a link to your Facebook page on your website page and also ensure your website link is on your Facebook page. This is a reciprocal link that is very important. Facebook will provide details on how you can put a Facebook Badge on your website.

The next challenge is to get people to sign up to your Facebook page. You can do this any number of ways. The most cost effective way in the 1st instance is contact all your clients on your mailing list and also put a link in your email.

You need to ensure the security on your Facebook page is set so the search engines pick you up. With that done you should start posting to your Facebook wall. Gradually you will start to get more and more people "liking" your Facebook page.

There are many groups setup in Facebook and these are setup to take feeds from other Facebook pages. The more postings you have on your Facebook page the more likely you are to have more links back to you in other Facebook groups. This may sound complicated but you don't need to do anything - it is all automatic and to your advantage. Just ensure you put posts on your Facebook Wall.

Consider if you want people to comment on your wall posts. My recommendation is no as it leaves your page open for spam and other peoples promotions. However this decision would depend on the information you will be providing on the page.

Facebook is quite a good tool to increase your business awareness. It is not the best tool but is a quality companion tool that is often used to keep existing and potential customers up to date with your business.
