So, you've decided to open up shop with a membership site in hopes of gaining more profits while working smarter, not necessarily harder. For most owners their first source of income is the dues paid by new and returning members. This creates recurring, residual income streams. However, there is a way to leverage your membership site with the use of a great affiliate program to bring in more new members, creating more revenue for you.

In simple terms, an affiliate program is one that is a pay for performance program. It is designed to compensate and reward a person (your affiliate) for signing up members to your membership site. Typically, the owner of the membership site or "merchant" will pay the affiliate a commission on the sales that result from their driven traffic.

Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to leverage your members/income because you are able to reach thousands of individuals through your affiliates list and their promotional efforts. Multiply this effort by tens or hundreds of affiliates marketing to their lists and the opportunities can be explosive.

This is probably the most powerful tool you can use to help you promote your website. Essentially you use the efforts of others to make your product (your membership site) visible. The more visible it is, the better chance you have of getting people to your site and converting them to paying members.

The key to successful affiliate marketing is to pay them well. After all, they are doing the promotional work. Make it as easy as possible for them to promote your site by giving them a choice of tools to use such as banner ads, affiliate I.D.'s and landing pages. You can include blog posts and an email campaign already written up for them so all they have to do is sign in and grab what they need. You can even include audio and video for them to use.

Affiliates are the life blood of your membership site so treat them with tender loving care. Establish a separate email address that belongs to your affiliates alone and educate them and keep them informed. Make them feel important because they are.

It's also a good idea to track their results...run contests and award the top producers. Treat them as partners and build healthy relationships with them just as you do your email list.

In a sense, an affiliate program is a business arrangement between you and your affiliates. How the affiliate is treated can often mean the difference between gaining more members or loosing a huge opportunity.

Make it easy for your affiliates to be successful. Give them the tools they need and make them feel special. They will reward you with sales.
