Hybrid cars were researched for years before they were ever marketed to the general public. All over the world companies were testing hybrids, including various branches of the military from the United States. Many individuals are not ready to give up their big cars, but that doesn't mean that hybrids are out of the question.

There are now larger hybrids, including the Tahoe by Chevrolet and the Yukon by GMC, because of the demands of consumers. These hybrids are expensive, so only a small group of car buyers can afford them. There are plenty of people who would love to own their own hybrid, but financially speaking, a fuel-efficient vehicle is out of the question. Even with the incentives offered by the government to get people to invest in a hybrid, it is still a purchase most people can't afford. There are waiting lists for many different hybrids, but a lot of this is because they are only making a limited number. Since there are more people wanting hybrids the companies are thinking about increasing the numbers.

Consumers are not very encouraged that gas prices are going to come back down, so more of them are ready to get their hybrids. There have been some reports that materials needed for making a quality hybrid are in short supply. Dysprosium, a rare element found in China, is needed to make the electric motors in the hybrids. It is also required for the propulsion system for the batteries, and since only the Chinese have access to it, they aren't willing to share too much of it. They are keeping what they have for their own electronic gadgets they want to sell throughout the world. The need for an alternative element is keeping researchers busy. A lot of people think that the hybrid car must be strange-looking, but you could drive by one on the highway and not know it.

If you are looking for more information, there are some terrific hybrids to choose from, and the internet can show you a complete list. Depending on the model you are thinking about, you can plan on spending between $27,000 and $64,000 for a new hybrid vehicle. The Honda Civic is one of the best-selling hybrids, being not only very fuel-efficient, but also a compact car that is comfortable and stylish. On the highway, it will get 45 miles to the gallon, and in town, only 40, and this will only get better with advancement in technology. The high price is a disadvantage, but in the long-run it is a good investment.

One hybrid that is a classy car, that people really like, is the Nissan Altima, which is one of the most affordable. Hybrids have come a long way, and they will continue to get better and better. Now it is a matter of getting the price down where it is more affordable for the typical driver.
