The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, a non-profit organization also known as MARF, has declared Sept. 26 as Mesothelioma Awareness Day to help shed light on the deadly lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure.
Although asbestos has been successfully banned from the European Union, many household products including children's toys still contain trace evidence of the dangerous carcinogen, asbestos. Because the side effects of asbestos have been documented for well over 100 years, removing asbestos should be of the utmost importance.
The non-profit has been working on making Mesothelioma Awareness Day nationally recognized since 2005. This year, MARF anticipates a larger impact as a large banner will be displayed in Rockefeller Center in New York City during the month of September. A special segment during MSNBC's The Today Show will also air. The show, which reaches an audience of 5.5 million people, will educate many Americans about the potentially harmful side effects of asbestos exposure, thus limiting the possibility for future mesothelioma cases.
In addition to the banner, MARF is encouraging people to contact local radio stations to promote a mesothelioma radio campaign, highlighting the music of recording artist, Warren Zevon who passed away from mesothelioma in 2003.
Mesothelioma can take upwards of 30 years to manifest, which makes it difficult to pinpoint the initial asbestos exposure. Many current cases have evolved from exposure that occurred during the 1960s and 1970s during a time that asbestos was not regulated as it is now.
Furthermore, several studies have illustrated that there is no safe level of asbestos exposure, which puts even more people at risk. LegalView provides free legal consults for individuals who may have been exposed to the harmful substance, as their health may be affected.
Mesothelioma Awareness Day is a viable solution to educate people about the dangers associated with asbestos. Coupled with other high profile deaths from the disease, including sportscaster Merlin Olsen and The Sex Pistols manager, Malcolm McLaren, Mesothelioma Awareness Day is one step closer to removing the threat of asbestos for households across the United States.
There is no cure for mesothelioma, although many treatment options are able to extend the patients life for several months, however generally the prognosis for a mesothelioma patient is very grim. More than 3,000 people are diagnosed with the deadly cancer every year.
Many patients seek additional information about Mesothelioma Awareness Day, other asbestos-related questions and free legal consultations for patients and family members who are faced with a mesothelioma diagnosis.
