Candida is an organism that occurs naturally in the gut, mouth and vagina but, due to the reliance of our 21st century diet on processed foodstuffs with a high sugar content, these flora proliferate and become out of control.
This overgrowth of yeast in the body can lead to leaky gut syndrome, allowing the organisms to enter the bloodstream and spread toxins throughout the body.
One of the most common places for its proliferation is externally, in the folds and creases of the skin itself, especially in the aftermath of long-term steroid or anti-biotic use. Candida is one of the main causes of persistent itching, which is the body's natural defence against something it wants to remove from the skin.
As soon as the skin recognises a foreign invader, the natural immune system kicks in, trying to defend itself by becoming inflamed around the site. This is the equivalent of putting up a hot wall, which is difficult for the attacking micro-organisms to penetrate, whilst it waits for the immune system to kick in and destroy the invaders.
However, Candida albicans is very difficult for the body to fight effectively because it has two key weapons - it can change its appearance to avoid detection, but it can also emit substances which suppress the immune system's response. This means that the cavalry doesn't come over the hill with its full complement of big guns to relieve the beleaguered fortress.
Because the Candida is never completely destroyed, the protective defence of the inflammation steadily increases, becoming ever more painful and causing unexplained rashes which last for years or dermatitis, with its increased histamine activity leading to debilitating conditions such as eczema or the scaly, thick lesions of psoriasis.
Traditionally, these are treated using steroid or anti-fungal creams with some short-term success. But, as soon as the applications cease, the symptoms will return, in many cases worsened by the exposure to the ingredients in the medicine.
To reverse these skin irritations, the yeast in the intestinal tract needs to be cleared by removing the nutrients that it allow it to flourish.
Following a diet that excludes yeast, moulds, fungus, vinegar and sugar will starve the Candida in the gut and force it to die off. Slowly the outposts that have grown up all over the body will begin to follow suit.
In addition, homeopathic remedies like milk thistle, which helps to improve liver function and so aids the body's natural immune system, and tea tree oil, or virgin coconut oil for topical treatments to ease the itchy discomfort, can also be extremely beneficial but you should consult with a registered homeopath to ensure that there are no contra-indications.
