The Caribbean island of Jamaica is easily one of the top travel destinations in the world. However, sports tourism is not something that plays a major role in that country's tourism industry. According to ESPN's vice president of Caribbean and Maritime media, Bernard Stewart, that's something Jamaican tourist officials need to take a good look at.
Stewart addressed Jamaican tourism and its connection to sports in recent remarks at the Jamaica Stock Exchange Investment and Capital Markets Conference. During his speech Stewart made mention of the huge impact sports has around the world. That impact can be felt not only socially, but economically as well.
"There are sports fans all over the world. We may not cheer for the same team and we may not anguish at the same losses, but sport brings people together," he said. "We all know that sports have a major impact all across the world, and you need to look to use sport to improve local businesses."
Sports tourism is gaining popularity among some of the world's best known resorts destinations including places like Mauritius and Dubai. It is an industry that produces some £380 billion annually for those countries wise enough to engage in it. Some of the most common sports tourism avenues are golf, racing, boating, competitive fishing, surfing, and skiing. Obviously, climate and weather play a big role in what types of sporting activities will be popular in a given locale.
As for Jamaica, she is a Caribbean island most known for her love of music. In fact, the 2012 Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival just wrapped up after a very successful event to open a year-long celebration of Jamaica's 50th anniversary of independence. Jamaica luxury hotels welcomed visitors from all over the world to kick off the festivities whilst multiple venues played host to some pretty big names in jazz, reggae, pop, and rock 'n roll.
Because of Jamaica's tropical climate and near perfect weather, she would be an ideal spot for sports tourism concentrated on water sports and golf. She is already a diving hotspot, with some of the most sought after reefs and wrecks in the world. Perhaps competitive sport fishing would also do well in the region. Regardless of how you look at it though, sports tourism offers yet another opportunity for Jamaica to retain its position as the number-one Caribbean destination.
The island certainly has her fair share of white sand beaches, grows of palm trees, and five-star luxury resorts waiting to meet the needs of the most discriminating traveller. Jamaica is also an island rich in culture; a culture that combines music, dancing, and food into a unique experience open to tourists. If you've not yet made your holiday plans for the end of winter, you might consider this incredible Caribbean destination.
