Three surveys recently released by the Cyprus Tourism Organization (CTO) show that Cyprus is making gains as a tourist option for UK and German residents. The survey specifically noted the special interest tourism market, of which Cyprus has a 5% share in Germany and a 4% share in Britain. In terms of overall ranking for special interest travel, Cyprus is 12th among UK tourists and 16th among Germans.

Despite not be in the top 10 in either country, Cypriot tourist officials are pleased with the survey's results because they show the Mediterranean island country making gains. Cyprus has faced terrible financial problems over the last 18 months; problems that have only been exacerbated by complaints of the nation's infrastructure. Last year government officials directed that infrastructure serve the needs of the tourist industry before all else, in an attempt to make sure visitors to Cyprus did not leave dissatisfied.

At least among Brits and Germans, the effort at keeping tourists happy seems to be paying off. Surveys suggest that the majority of British and German visitors last year were very satisfied with their stay and planned to return to Cyprus in the future. Furthermore, more than 60% of the visitors from both countries equate Cyprus as a destination synonymous with "sun and sea" holidays. According to Deputy Head Director of Tourism Anita Demetriades, Cyprus needs to continue developing its special interest market if it intends to reach its ultimate tourism goals.

"The development of alternative forms of tourism contributes greatly to shaping a fully fledged image of Cyprus as a tourist destination," she said. "Special interests contribute in a positive way to achieving the main goals of the tourist strategy in relation to dealing with seasonality problems; increasing holiday demand towards Cyprus and enhancing arrivals in out of season periods, as well as increasing visitors per capita spending."

Although Cyprus luxury holidays may not be on par with those in other destinations like Dubai, Mauritius, and St. Lucia, the Cypriot tourist industry is working as hard as ever to improve both their product and image. One of their strongest selling points lies in the cultural diversity the island possesses. Few other holiday destinations offer both the sand and sea experience and the cultural enrichment Cyprus provides in a single package. Visitors can enjoy days of peaceful relaxation on the resort beach then head inland to meet the locals, sample native cuisine, tour historically important sites, and even join residents for a drink or a game of cards.

One of nicest benefits to European travellers is the close proximity of Cyprus to Europe. Where travel to the Indian Ocean or the Caribbean region is a much longer and more tiring experience, Cyprus is a lot closer to home. This means shorter flight times and more days on Cyprus. It also means slightly less cost overall.

Several options for Cyprus luxury holidays are available from Airworld Tours, the luxury holiday company based in the UK.
