LUX Island, the hotel operator with properties in Mauritius, the Maldives, and Reunion Island recently announced its second-quarter financial data and its projections for the first three months of 2012. During the second quarter, which runs from October through December for the Mauritian tourist industry, LUX revenues reached more than 1.1 billion rupees. That's an increase of nearly 15% over the same period last year. Profit was up 12% at 247 million rupees. Both company officials and industry analysts see no reason why the good numbers won't continue through March of 2012.
"The three months to March looks positive," said LUX CEO Paul Jones. "Results for the year will be definitely better than last year."
Mauritius-based LUX Island is the country's third-largest hotel operator in terms of market share. They follow behind only New Mauritius Hotels Ltd. and Sun resorts Ltd. Second-quarter results showed that all three companies have done very well since the start of last year, in the midst of a surging tourist industry which saw a revenue increase of about 8% for 2011. Analysts point to an aggressive marketing campaign in Asian and Indian markets to make up for lost French and UK business brought on by the European debt crisis.
As for the LUX brand, a concerted effort has been made to redesign the company's properties with a lighter and brighter feel. The company has also focused on Mauritius honeymoon packages, family holidays, and other specific areas of tourism to attract a certain kind of clientèle. Although the LUX brand is still fairly new it has done very well all across the Indian Ocean region. It certainly doesn't hurt that Mauritius is one of the premier destinations in the world for luxury travellers.
Mauritius offers guests the opportunity to relax in an environment that is both soothing and energizing at the same time. The natural surroundings of the island incorporate incredible mountain views, tropical gardens that bring the senses alive, white sand beaches perfect for romantic walks and peaceful lagoons that make the perfect setting for quiet time alone. And given the fact that Mauritius resort operators know a thing or two about luxury, guests are always made to feel like royalty whenever they visit.
As the Mauritius tourist industry continues to develop it will be interesting to see how well it fares in 2012. So far all looks good through mid-February. If things go as Tourism Board officials hope, Mauritius could see more than 1 million visitors this year, a goal the Tourism Board was not afraid to set after reaching just over 900,000 in 2011.
