At the beginning of the year (2012) it was learned that Air Seychelles would discontinue its direct flights to and from Europe and concentrate instead on regional flights between Seychelles, Mauritius, and Reunion Island. As it turns out, the struggling airline reached a deal with Etihad Airways that gives the flagship UAE airline operational control over Air Seychelles. The move is just the latest in a recent series of moves that have strengthened the relationship between the UAE and Seychelles.
The arrangement is a great win for Air Seychelles, especially given the fact that it has been a money-losing prospect for the better part of three years. At the heart of the airline's struggles lies both Etihad and Emirates; two UAE airlines that have been increasingly offering more direct flights to Seychelles. In a way, it's a bit ironic that these two airlines are responsible for putting Air Seychelles in a position where it had to turn over control of its business to Etihad in order to stay afloat.
No one's complaining, mind you, because it increases the total number of flights arriving in Seychelles from other destinations. And, just like the long-standing practice of twin centre holidays in Dubai and Mauritius, Seychelles now has the opportunity to develop its own niche in a similar manner. The deal with Etihad makes it very attractive and affordable to enjoy a twin centre holiday between Abu Dhabi and Seychelles. European travellers can spend a few days in Abu Dhabi, enjoying the wonderful weather and culture there, before continuing on to an all inclusive Seychelles holiday.
While Seychelles government officials have been careful to describe their relationship with the UAE as a close friendship, UAE President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was not afraid to go a step further in describing it as a "love affair." The UAE is actively involved in promoting Seychelles tourism in every locale where they have service, and they are a primary sponsor of the annual Seychelles Carnival; an event deemed to be one of the most important on the Seychelles tourism calendar.
France and the UK continue to be the largest suppliers of arrivals to Seychelles, particularly in the romantic honeymoon and beach wedding markets. The Indian Ocean nation is comprised of hundreds of individual islands which make perfect locations for private luxury resorts. Add to the geography a near perfect tropical climate, all the sun and sand you can handle, and extremely affordable prices, and you have a holiday destination that is extremely attractive.
It remains to be seen how Air Seychelles will do under Etihad. But if past history of Etihad is any indication, the troubled Seychelles airline should return to profitability rather quickly. Meanwhile, the increased traffic between the United Arab Emirates and Seychelles will only result in greater opportunities for tourists.
