The holiday season is upon us, and retailers have priced their merchandise to fly off shelves quickly. A shrink wrap machine and labels with eye-catching, digital printing makes many of these attractive pricing structures possible. Even when an item is not on sale, the packaging and placement of the product just might sell you. Although you believe you make conscious and deliberate purchasing decisions, this may not always be the case. In fact, two-thirds of our purchasing decisions are the result of strategic merchandising.
One of the first things you notice upon entering a grocery establishment is the layout of the merchandise. Typically, flowers will be the first things you see because they convey a sense of beauty and freshness. In other words, flowers serve as psychological bait to spark your curiosity. And once you're hooked, you'll likely spend more than originally planned. As you head toward the center of the store, your eyes are drawn toward the products on end caps of aisles.
While the products on end caps may not be on sale, they are far more likely to be packaged in bulk. For most consumers, it is hard to resist the two-for-the-price-of-one kind of logic. And after you purchase these kinds of bulk packages, there is something you will notice about the individuals items inside: not for individual sale. Oftentimes you will read this text on labels of products that are shrink wrapped with two or more products to a pack. This kind of packaging is common for beverages, toiletries, cleaning products, medicine and more.
Can you recall the kind of product or products you last purchased in bulk packaging? Better yet, was it your intention to purchase bulk packaging when you entered the store? If you answered this question honestly, your answer would likely be no.
Nevertheless, bulk packaging is convenient, attractive and conveys a sense of value to the consumer So, while you are shopping for necessities, groceries or holiday gifts, why not buy in bulk? Although this may not have been your goal, sometimes the price for two or three is actually better than one. Manufactures are hoping you'll make these kinds of last-minute decisions, and thus, the shrink wrap machine becomes a worthy, capital investment.
