Ever been to a fancy dress party where someone has come up to you and said "So who are you supposed to be?". It happened to me years ago when I did a DIY job pulling together my Sporty Spice outfit for a corporate do with a fancy dress theme of the letter 'S'. I was apparently looking like a cross between a poor man's Lara Croft and like I was off to visit the gym! Everything but Sporty Spice! And I struggled to pull a single quote out of my hat to give my friends a clue...

Thankfully these days the quality of the costumes available are second to none and you can achieve instant recognition. So that's the most important job done. But to help you really get into character and ensure you can pull off your costume and get a few laughs along the way, we have compiled this entertaining list of one liners to accompany your chosen fancy dress costume, so you can be sure not only will you look the part on the night, you can act the part and keep the guests entertained all evening!

"Elementary my dear Watson" - The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939)

Wearing an awesome Sherlock Holmes costume will allow you to retain an aura of quiet dignity and respect all evening. Ensure you provide opportunities for plenty of sweeping hand gestures with your pipe whilst drawing large conclusions from small observations with an air of superiority.

Ensure your Sherlock ego displays more than your average amount of arrogance. This costume will allow you to gorge yourself silly at the buffet table, whilst you can breezily explain that Holmes was known for his erratic eating habits. Alternatively it's a good fall back if the food is rubbish.

"Tell me something, my friend. You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight", The Joker (Jack Nicholson) Batman,(1989)

Ahh, now wearing the infamous Joker fancy dress costume, Batman's arch rival, is a great character to get into for the evening. Obviously you need to dial down the master criminal and violent psychopath side of the Joker's persona and look to adopt the goofy trickster side of the Joker's split personality. A few fancy dress accessories up your sleeve will earn you some laughs and ensure you live up to the expectation, that as the Joker you need to create some jokes... a deck of playing cards (minus the blades) a squirting flower (just water, no acid), exploding cigars and the bang flag gun all should fit the bill nicely.

If you happen to overindulge in alcoholic beverages, it should be obvious to all that you're simply playing the part of the Joker and not some lightweight in the booze department. If you want to go totally over the top portraying this character you can try the Joker's "fourth wall awareness". To achieve this effect, whilst playing your jokes on a bunch of friends, turn to a make believe camera and say "Don't try this at home kids". Punctuate conversation with a commentary into a make believe camera. If folks haven't rendered you insane from the alcohol, this will certainly do it!

"I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner", Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) The Silence of the Lambs, (1991)

You will totally freak your friends out wearing the chilling Hannibal Lecter Fancy Dress Costume. Becoming the brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer for the night is definitely best suited to movie or horror themed fancy dress evenings, or of course a Halloween fancy dress party.

So how can you best portray the characteristics of Hannibal the Cannibal? Well for starters, give yourself an extra digit on your left hand, Hannibal had the condition known as mid ray duplication sexdactyly. Waving about your 6 fingered hand not so subtlety, will definitely be a conversation starter. Demonstrating your knowledge of art, music, medicine and of course cooking; a love of chianti and fava beans will help to portray Lecter perfectly.

Pretending to close your eyes and identify your comrades with your heightened sense of smell will show off another of Lecter's almost supernatural traits. Peppering the conversation with the odd phrase in any of the following languages including Lithuatian, Japanese, Italian, Russian, Polish, French, German and Spanish will earn you brownie points as a class Lecter act. Obviously you will cause quite a stir if you have a friend help tie you down to a an upright trolley and wheel you round the room for the evening, granted, wearing the muzzle and heavy restraints will hinder conversation, and your dance moves somewhat, but there will be no mistaking you as Hannibal the Cannibal!

Whatever fancy dress character you are hoping to be for an evening at your next fancy dress soiree, be sure to do a bit of research and go adequately prepared with some classic one liners and character traits up your sleeve, to do your costume justice. You'll have a brilliant time and keep you friends most amused!

Have fun out there...
