There are as many different internet marketing techniques and business models out there as there are offline businesses. But just as in brick and mortar businesses, there are some basic fundamentals for online marketing as well. After having mastered the basics, it is also important to begin learning the more advanced internet marketing techniques that can take your business to a higher level.

Basic internet marketing begins with a website and an understanding of keyword research. Keyword research is certainly necessary in order to target niches people are in, looking for solutions to their problems or answers to their questions. Without knowing the keywords that people are using to search on the internet you will not be able to identify a niche worth putting your time, money and attention into.

Once you've discovered a niche that shows some promise, and you have products that you can sell as an affiliate, or this is a niche in which you can sell a product of your own, then you need a website to gather visitor's names with an opt-in form so you can build a list.

You hear internet marketers say it all the time, "build a list" or "the money is in the list". The list is a valuable tool of names and email addresses of people that have given you permission to send them emails about your information, and offers.

They have requested to hear from you and this is really important. Without their confirmation, your messages may be considered SPAM. The double opt-in is used by internet marketers to be sure that your emails are not flagged as SPAM. There are a few different email services and programs that can help you with the double opt-in process and with auto-responders to set up multiple follow-up emails to those on your list.

Once you have a niche, a product and a website you are ready to do the marketing end of your business.

The many internet marketing techniques you can employ would be any (or all) of the following:

- article marketing

- social media marketing

- joint ventures

- blogging

- guest blogging

- video marketing

- podcasts

- webinars

- mentoring

- pay per click advertising

- giveaways

And there are many more techniques to discover.

You may even decide to focus on only a few of these marketing techniques. Each one can take some time to learn well and master.

Be aware of emerging trends - there is always something new to learn. If it happens to be another internet marketing technique promising a shortcut or a simpler way of doing things, check it out. Try it and see if it is what it says it is. Then you can decide if you want to stay with it or not.

But don't ignore it just because you have found what does work for you. Keep things fresh and interesting and stay on the edge of new internet marketing techniques.
