The Pell Grant was established to provide education to those who are unable to afford higher education beyond their high school years. The most vital thing that you should know to qualify for this grant is your ability to demonstrate a financial need for such aid. It stands as an indicator of your ability to pay for your educational expenses. Since this grant is geared towards those who comes from lower-incomes families who are having difficulties in paying for their children's higher education, you will need to exhibit a certain high level of financial need which will be determined by the Department of Education through the information you provided during the submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Before you get excited about the grant, it is important to first understand the Pell Grant, get to know its limitations, how it can help you and how to get approved each year. The crucial thing that you need to know about this grant is that you must reapply each year that you are in school to receive the award since it is awarded on an annual basis.

With the information you provide in the FAFSA, the Department of Education will determine your financial need through the Expected Family Income (EFC) metric. It serves as an estimate for the amount of money your family can contribute towards your educational expenses in the upcoming school year. As mentioned earlier, it plays a vital role towards determining whether you get the grant or not. Other than that, coupled with your cost of attendance, EFC will determine the amount of money you can get. A higher EFC means that your family could contribute more to your college education and therefore, the lesser the amount you are able to get. Also, bear in mind that you will be disqualified from receiving this award if you exceed the set EFC cutoff amount.

Of course, as with every program, there are also some restrictions that can prevent you from getting this award. First off, you must only attend the universities which are participating in the Pell Grant program. A satisfactory academic progress is also expected from you in a degree-oriented curriculum and most of the Pell Grants are awarded to those who are attending an undergraduate program. Other than that, you should not be attached to any student loan currently and you must not have a Pell overpayment on your record. If you are not a United States citizen, you must be able to prove that you are living legally in the country on a permanent basis.

It is always important to check on the restrictions and the qualifications before applying for this grant in order to protect yourself from planning for such financial aid when it is not available to you. Since this is a grant, you don't have to worry about paying back the money. If you think you might qualify, just fill out a FAFSA to estimate where you stand.

Leveraging pell grants to pay for school is a great idea in a down economy. In order to qualify, the applicant must meet pell grant eligibility requirements. Pell grant requirements have become easier to understand and achieve. To find out more information about pell grants, please visit: =>http://pellgrantguide.org/
