A physical therapist assistant plays an important role in many people's lives. Physical therapists generally diagnose and treat those who are having injuries or illnesses which limit their daily activities. Their main aim is to help the patient to regain back full mobility or as much mobility as they can. This job requires a lot of responsibility and it can be a very tiring job without the supporting role of a physical therapist assistant which makes things easier. A physical therapist assistant helps the patients in their rehabilitation exercise.

First and foremost, you should be clear of what qualities you should possess before taking up this job. Physical therapy is mainly a hands-on job since it involves conducting therapeutic exercises, providing therapeutic massages and not to forget putting on patients' crutches and braces. You may also need to lift the patients from or onto the wheelchair whenever required. Therefore, it is important to have good physical strength and also the enthusiasm to help those patients in need. Otherwise, you will find this job to be very demanding and exhausting.

You should also bear in mind that not all patients are willing to undergo the exercises and they might go out of their way just to avoid it. So, you will be needed to encourage, comfort and maneuver them for their own good. Therefore, you will need good interpersonal skills since there are a variety of personalities you will need to interact with and handle. The faster you can build a trusting relationship with the patient, the faster they will respond to your care, guidance and advice. This will lead to a faster completion of their treatment which means they can go back to their original life quicker.

So, now that you know you have the qualities to become a good physical therapist assistant, how do you go about becoming one? This job requires a license to practice and you will need at least an associate degree. Some of the challenges of being a physical therapist assistant are the limitations of the title itself. As an assistant, you are limited to physical therapist assistant duties only. You should also be willing to work extra and weekend hours. Bear in mind that this job is not a stepping stone towards becoming a physical therapist since the training is different.

In conclusion, physical therapist assistant is suitable for those who do not like a high level of responsibility but would still like to work in a compassionate field of nursing. Since a physical therapist assistant works under the direct supervision of the physical therapist, physical therapist will devise the treatment plan and the implementing of the treatment plan is done by the assistant. The flexibility of this job is the advantage that this job offers and the salary of about $40000 per annum would be quite attractive to most people.
