Taking a vacation is supposed to be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable things in the world. We work hard to ensure that we have everything packed and that we are planning our itineraries in advance, but there is always much room that can go wrong, especially when your destination is somewhere that you have never been before. To paraphrase one of the most commonly heard adages in media right now, however, there's a map for that! Google Maps offers a variety of different functions, including their now famous street view. This and other Google Maps features, when used properly, can make a big difference in helping you plan your travel.

Using Street View to Choose Accommodations

One thing that most people need to do in advance when traveling is book accommodations. There are plenty of websites that enable you to do this, but as many travelers can attest, everything is not always as it appears online. Using Google Maps and the Street View feature in particular can actually allow you to get a good look at the property before you decide whether or not you want to choose it. You can see what is nearby and how far it really is from attractions and points of interest. Using Google Earth, you can also get a clearer idea of the local landscape and how far the hotel is from beaches, etc. While the website usually tells you in yards or feet, it can help to have a visual, not to mention to see what might be standing between your hotel and your view of the water.

Using Google Maps to Create an Itinerary

Another excellent use of Google Maps when planning travel is to create an itinerary. While simply mapping out attractions based on mileage can seem like the best idea, Google Maps can give you actual routes and transit times. Logistically speaking, it may take longer to get to a point of interest a mile away than one three miles away, depending on traffic, parking, one way streets, and whether or not the street even allows cars. Using Google Maps, you can find out where each point of interest you would like to visit is located and the best way to get there. This can help you map trips by car or on foot and can help you make the best use of your time to ensure that you can see everything you want on your trips.

Maps Make Travel Easier

The bottom line is that interactive online maps simply make the travel experience easier. Even if you prefer to venture off the beaten path, Google Maps can help you find points of interest in the area that you may not discover while walking or driving. Making the best use of technology without allowing it to take over your trip is definitely a balancing act, but many of the features offered with interactive Google Maps are capable of helping you enrich your travel experience and really make the most of it.
