Internet reputation management is all about tracking people's actions online and removing any negative comments or opinions and converting those negatives in to positive articles, blogs or news stories. Online reputation management is primarily a new concept thanks to the Internet.

Before, marketers did what was know as crisis management, especially for Fortune 500 companies and their executives. However since the onset of the Internet, there has been growth in online reputation management for people who have spoken out of turn online - and have caused themselves many problems.

No matter what business you are in, you rely on your personal and professional reputation to protect and enhance your livelihood. Your reputation can sway public opinion, positively or negatively which ultimately will have an impact on the success of any business you are involved with.

Most reputation management firms are involved with search engine optimization (SEO)strategies and tactics that involve a process to identify and evaluate all negative search results, and then they create and execute a strategic plan to:

1) Move the negative mentions online to the back pages of Google, and other search engines, and;
2) Replace the negative mentions with positive search results.

In general, unless you have a claim that a lawyer can resolve, any negative publicity or comments that you have made online, or that anyone else makes about you or your business on the Internet cannot be deleted from the search engines.

What reputation management consultants can do, however, is to move any negative items down and hopefully off the first page of Google and other search engines. Typically users will not look past the first page of search results after they search fro something, so simply moving the results off of the first page can be a very effective solution to most problems online Next, by introducing positive listings that create positive items that will appear at the top of the search engines, the good stories push the negative ones down.

The extra benefit to reputation management is that this content can be crafted and controlled by you - therefore enhancing your reputation. In addition to creating new positive content to be posted on the Internet, reputation management consultants also promote these positive results so your name will rank higher in the search engines.

Experts use the syndication of articles online, blogs, websites, press releases, social media marketing and linking strategies. Success depends on the skills that are deployed that usually need to be performed on an ongoing basis until the objectives are achieved.

When it comes to reputation management, every situation or client is different and unique, and depending upon the severity of the negative listings, results can take a number of months to achieve.
