Middle age is accompanied by a lot of problems, not just those of an emotional or intellectual nature, but also physical ones. Of all the things that are affected by aging, the physical aspect is the most immediate and obvious. Although there may be some differences between the sexes, one of the most common problems experienced in middle age is that of hair loss. Doctors have determined that almost 50% of the male population experience baldness, compared to only 20% of women. Commonly, a U-shaped formation of hair on the sides and back of the scalp happens for males, whereas women suffer from a gradual decrease in their overall hair count.

The evidence from scientific studies suggests that hair loss is most commonly caused by aging, by a change in hormones and/or by genetics. Obviously, the earlier the hair loss begins, the more profound the baldness will become. Either out of vanity or embarrassment, people nowadays are seeking ways to solve their hair problems. Those who cannot afford treatments merely wear hats, or other hair or head accessories, but those who can afford to spend a bit of money buy treatments, such as minoxidil. Other sufferers go for the option of a hair transplant, a procedure that has been carried out for more than thirty years now.

Of all these possibilities, hair transplant has been the more modern approach towards avoiding, if not eliminating, total hair loss. This procedure utilizes the existing hair, removing small plugs of skin with hair from the areas where the hair growth is good, and transplanting these plugs to the areas of the scalp where the hair has been lost. Because of this, it is imperative that patients should have some healthy existing hair, particularly at the sides and back of the scalp, as these areas will serve as the sources for the good hair to be transplanted. As with any other type of surgery is, a hair transplant does involve some risk which the patient should be aware of. It is important to talk things through carefully with your surgeon and physician before deciding to undergo any kind of surgery.

Prior to the actual surgery, physicians usually analyze the type of hair that the patient has, the patient's family history, the patient's medical history, and so on. It is also important that you discuss your lifestyle and expectations with the doctor so that you will be well informed about the effect the surgery will have.

Anesthesia is used during the hair transplant, and that is why it is important for you to have someone to drive you home. Healing takes a number of days during which you may actually experience some hair fall. This is fairly normal, and it usually takes several weeks before the new hair growth becomes noticeable.

Hair transplants can vary in their effects and are dependent upon a number of factors. Sometimes it can take a number of sessions before the desired results are achieved. Also, different methods of hair transplant may be carried out depending upon the particular problems of the patient. That is why it is important to have a really good and clear discussion with the hair transplant surgeon beforehand.

Many surgeons nowadays are able to perform hair transplants. It will just be up to you to choose the surgeon whom you trust the most.
