During the Second World War, life aboard the sea going war vessel the U-Boat was tough, One man was so inspired by the heroics of the seafaring specialists on these boats that hedrew up a set of designs for a U-Boat watch that would stand up to the rigours of life at sea. The man's name was Ilvo Fontana and although he never lived to see the fulfilment of his dream, he stored the drawings and samples in his home in Italy.
The U-Boat crews consisted of ordinary seamen and a number of specialist crew such as the torpedo man, the machine man, the radio man who kept the equipment aboard the boat in working order. U-Boat patrols during the war could run from three weeks to six months, depending on the expedition. During the time they were on board the U-Boat the crew couldn't bathe or change their clothes.
Standing watch and loading torpedoes on the U-boat was the job of the ordinary seamen who did it in three shifts of eight hours each. Standing on watch duty was dangerous as men could be swept overboard into the harsh waters of the Atlantic so they were secured by safety lines. The idea behind the U-Boat watch was that it would stand up to harsh conditions and be fit for the brave officers of the vessel.
The U-Boat watch stayed at the design stage until the designer's grandson found the drawings and samples and sixty years later launched the U-boat brand of watches, the watches were aimed at modern seafaring heroes in memory of the brave men who served on the U-boats during the war. The modern U-boat watch is designed to stand up to the rigours of the seafaring life. The style of the U-Boat watches is big and bold and oversized like the original heroes the brand was named for.
Today's seafarers can enjoy the ultimate U-1001 U-Boat watch, which is made from grade 5 titanium, is a limited edition kept at 1001 pieces across the world, and is water resistant up to 1001 metres. While the original idea for the U-Boat watch started many years ago with specific people in mind, it is the ultimate watch for today's seafaring heroes.
