Regrettably most people have experienced a collision between a car and truck and everyone knows who comes of worst. Truck drivers have limited visibility and manoeuvrability and as a car driver you need to be aware of these limitations. Everyone has to share the roads with each other, but frustrations between car and truck drivers can result in serious consequences.
Impatience is often a key factor in an accident occurring. The need to get past a truck and to get to your destination on time takes preference to you, your passengers and other road user's safety. Next time you feel the urge to try to get past a truck when you know there is little room, just think for one second before you do it and consider the possible implications. Taking that one second break to think can make the difference between arriving at your destination or not.
Never drive in a way that may cause a truck driver to over react. For example, you get past a truck and you have someone tailgating so you pull directly in front of the truck in a space that makes the conditions dangerous. The truck driver may slam on his brakes and, if the road conditions are poor, it can result in a truck driver losing control. Once control is lost, there is little a truck driver can do to regain control; the trailer starts to slide and the kinetic energy of the trailer causes it to start to jack knife. The results can be disastrous for cars behind and to the side of the truck; and all because you pulled directly in front.
Try to envisage what view a truck driver has from his cab. Yes, he has a good view of the road ahead, but what can the driver see in his rear-view mirrors. Quite simply, if you are unable to see a trucks mirrors, then you can be pretty certain the truck driver can't see you. Try to position yourself so you have a good view of the mirrors at all times. If you make the decision to pass a truck then look ahead to make sure the road is clear. Keep a good distance between the side of the truck and your car, trucks produce a lot of wind turbulence and if you get too close to the side you can feel your car being sucked toward the truck. This can be scary and make you overcompensate or even brake. Try to pass a truck quickly, but safely; that's not to say you exceed the speed limit.
Keep a close eye on a trucks turn indicators. If you see them on indicating the truck is about to pull out, don't accelerate to get past, let the truck out. Trucks can be difficult to manoeuvre and once a truck driver is committed to pulling out the driver isn't able to suddenly pull back in without creating a potentially dangerous situation.
A truck turning on a tight corner is something else to be aware of. They need plenty of road to complete the turn and during the manoeuvre the truck driver's rear vision is limited. If you are sitting right next to a truck, you have nowhere to go and the driver probably can't see you. Stay back and let the truck turn first.
