British Citizenship Test, also referred to as Life in the UK Test, is highly important for those who wish to apply for UK settlement or citizenship, which is sometimes also known by such names as ‘permanent residence' or ‘indefinite leave to remain.' In other words, British Citizenship Test is inevitable for those who want to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen. The prime object of the test is to ensure whether the applicants have adequate knowledge on the UK law as well as the English language. However, before appearing for the test, it is important that you comply with all other requirements of naturalisation. For instance, in order to appear for the test, the candidates' level of English language must be ESOL (English for Speakers for Other Languages) Entry 3.

It is quite easy to take the British Citizenship Test, as there are more than 90 test centers across the country, many of them with their own learning centers with facilities to enhance your computer knowledge and language. The test is administered by the Ufi Ltd for Home Office. Ufi Ltd is a non profit organization that conducts online tests and assessment. A sum of £34 has to be remitted in order to appear for the test. The test consists of about 24 multiple choice questions, which in turn is chosen by computer and previewed by the ministers. The duration of the test is 45 minutes, and the applicants are required to answer at least 18 correct answers. However, the duration is extended for the candidates with physical disabilities.

Now we will discuss the topics covered in the test. The British Citizenship Test primarily covers topics such as the situation of Britain today, the way which Britain is governed, and the working system as well as the formal institutions of the UK. Such topics as UK employment issues and science and technology form part of the test. All these topics are included in the 2, 3, and 4th chapters of the handbook published by the Home Office, known as Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship. The book can be shopped from the Stationery Office or from any other book shops. Facilities are also made available to order this book online. In addition, if your level of English is below ESOL Entry 3, you are required to take special classes for ESOL.

Among the items that have to be produced at the test center in order to submit to the supervisor are a passport; UK photocard driving license (either full or provisional); immigration status document; any of these Home office documents: Certificate of Identity Document, Stateless Person Document, or Convention Travel Document; and a passport sized photo of the candidate. On successful completion of the test, a letter proving your success will be send, namely, pass notification letter. Later, this letter, along with your applicant letter, has to be submitted at the Home Office. Application forms can be submitted in two ways: one through the post and the other via the Nationality Checking Service (NCS). But, before submitting the application form, it is important to check that you have properly filled the form, as refund is not provided for the incorrect submissions.
