If Goa is known for its sprawling beaches and the Himalaya's for their snow capped peaks, Mumbai is known for all that its bustling city life has to offer. Once a scene of struggle between different empires for its wealthy lands, Bombay (or Mumbai as it is known today) has become one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities with its mixture of people of all kinds.
If you were to arrive in Bombay for any reason one day (on a business trip or as part of a touristic travel), the first thing you'll see is that the city never sleeps. You'll never have difficulty finding a cab at any hour of the day. If you like shopping, Bombay not only offers roadside stalls like the ones lined up at Colaba Causeway but also has ample shopping malls with a wide variety of products to choose from. Grand sized malls can be found all over the city and are the perfect outing on a warm day.
If you want a more traditional taste in shopping you can head down to the Crawford Market or into the heart of Central Mumbai where you can mix with the people and enjoy their company while getting the cheapest prices.
Mumbai is a great fashion destination for the trendy tourist. You can indulge yourself into the brand and budget that suits you best. While 5 star hotels are showcases for brands like Gucci and Versace, the humble Fashion Street is a place where you can find anything of your choice for very affordable prices.
Don't get too lost in shopping though because the city also has incredibly natural beauty surrounding it. In the central part of the city is the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which is adored by photographers for its beautiful showcase of nature. The number of lakes within and around the city, starting with Powai Lake, are also great destinations for relaxation.
Even though Mumbai city does have a number of small beaches known as different "Chowpatty"within the city itself, heading out of town to enjoy peace and quiet is a good idea.
Alibag is a beautiful destination with its amazing green foliage. One finds himself wondering how a place can be so beautiful, somewhat like paradise. A meditation teacher known as Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi (who is Indian herself) has commented that God created this place beautifully so the people coming here could feel their own beauty. There are plenty of cottages to stay here over the weekend.
Even though Mumbai is a lively and crowded city, it's also home to numerous Sahaja Yoga meditation centers all around it where you can discover your spiritual qualities and make a fresh start in life. Sahaja Yoga is taught by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi and is based on the awakening of an inner energy called as the Kundalini. Once awakened, this energy spontaneously sparks off a process of regenaration and enlightenment in the body, healing and strengthening the entire being and psyche. A daily 10 minute meditation is enough to experience an inner state of bliss unexpressable with words. Many places in India, and also in various parts of the world, have very strong natural vibrations that help one to easier achieve this state of bliss. Mumbai, in spite of being a modern cosmopolitan city, has a quite few such places. So, whether you are interested in leisure or in spirituality, Mumbai is a place worth of visiting.
