It's often assumed that washing your car at home is friendlier to the environment than bringing it to a car wash. Perhaps it is more economical, but surprisingly not environment friendly at all. Did you know that the water drained from your home waste water system goes directly to the sewers that undergo treatment before being released back to the environment? While if you wash your car in your garage, or in front of your house, the waste water from the wash goes directly into sidewalk drains that does not undergo treatment. It makes its way straight to rivers and streams bringing with it harmful chemicals from the car shampoo you have used. Whereas in car wash services, the water released from the wash undergoes treatment before being released back to the environment.
If you want to get an economical and environment friendly car wash, you can have both. When you wash your car at home it is recommended to use eco friendly products. You have an option to use biodegradable soap that is sold in any car wash company. Be sure and look for a biodegradable seal of authenticity. Otherwise, you can make your own biodegradable soap in the comfort of your own kitchen. Follow these easy steps in concocting an environmentally friendly car cleaner at home.
1. Prepare and measure one cup of liquid dish washing soap.
2. Prepare ¾ cup of powdered detergent that should not contain phosphate and chlorine. Take note that the detergent you are using is not fuel based as well.
3. Prepare three gallons of water.
4. Mix all ingredients together making sure that the granules have merged and settled before using.
Another eco friendly practice is to wash your car where it drains towards the sod. It would be better that soil would absorb the wastes since it can use the waste water in the production of nutrients for the plant sown in it.
There are also a few products in the market today which offers an alternative to synthetic and harmful car cleaning products. One of which are a growing number of waterless products used in spot cleaning. They come in spray bottles or plastic containers that can be applied directly to the car's surface where there is dirt and wiped off with a wash cloth or a sponge. It encourages minimal amount of water of the user prefers to add some.
It is also recommended that when considering other eco products in the use of washing cars to use cellulose based sponges instead of wood pulp or the real sea sponges. Purchasing the cellulose based ones discourages the cultivation of real sponges and use of wood that results in logging. The synthetic sponges do not emit harmful by products to the environment.
