A happy single mom is almost an oxymoron. Living on your own can be tough, but it’s even tougher when you have children to take care of. When you’re a single mom without your spouse or a significant other in your life all the responsibility falls on your shoulders. At times you’re both the mom and the dad. The playful parent and the disciplinarian.
Most moms think they can handle everything that comes their way even without a support system. But that’s not a good idea. It’s not a good for anyone to go it alone. There’s no one to take over when things get tough and when the kids get to be too much to handle at least for the moment. When you have a lot of stress it easy to take it out on the one’s closes to you. The children who are the most vulnerable can get caught up in a bad situation.
One of the best ways to help yourself and allow your children to be part of the solution is to have a family meeting. Ask the children to help you mange the home so you don’t get overloaded and you’ll be able to spend quality time together. You can find chores that are appropriate for almost every age. Even a two year old can help around the house. The first thing you will need to do is sit your children down and explain to them that you can’t do everything and you will need some help from them.
Here’s a few stress management solutions that can help.
Organization
Having an organized home is one way to live with less stress. There are many things you can do to organize your home. Create a chore list so that each person in the family knows exactly what they have to do each day. Everyone in the family needs a laundry basket in their room. Choose a day during the week that will be laundry day and have each person take their basket to the laundry room on that day. Everyone is assigned to the task of picking up after themselves, taking dishes to the sink, putting toys away, etc.
Personal time
Taking time for you is extremely important when you are doing everything on your own. Personal time away from the children should be done on a daily basis, even if it’s 15 minutes if at all possible. You will feel better about everything and you will have more energy. You can take a bath, read a magazine, or paint your finger nails. Once a month you should take time for yourself outside of the home and physically away from the children You can go to a hair salon and have your hair and nails done. This will allow you even more relaxation because you will be outside of your home and completely away from all distractions.
Support system
I can’t say enough about having a good support system. Support systems are important no matter what you are doing in your life weather it’s losing weight, finding a new job, or dealing with stress. Single moms have more stress than almost anyone else. When you have a support system in place you will feel better knowing there are others to help you. Your support system can be there for you to call on when you need a shoulder to cry on, they can help you by taking the children for a while, or they can come and keep you company when you’re feeling alone.
Being a single mother is tough, but it can be a little easier when you use these tips. Your children are only little for a short while. You don’t want to spend all your time and their childhood stressed out. Remember that life is too short to spend it being stress out. Your children are your blessing and give unconditional love.
