Never before has the web seen such a revolution as we are currently seeing today with the explosion of social marketing and social media sites. It's utterly amazing.
There are the major sites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, FriendFeed, LinkedIn, and I could go on and on. There are also smaller niche sites like the communities you may find on Ning. I actually have a social marketing community using that platform, and am a member of various smaller niche communities using Ning as well.
Now I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t got the time or the inclination to join every social marketing site out there, and neither can or should you if you are going to make any money at your business.
There just isn't enough time.
But let's be honest here. Social marketing is not just "busy work". Don't make the same mistake that so many people on the web did with blogging years ago -- and not "catch on" to the new technology until you have a zillion other competitors out there already deep in the social marketing stratosphere and you are simply playing catch up.
No you need to get in the game, but you don't have to spread yourself all over the place to accomplish it. The key is being selective. Like you do with your produce, your dating, your high-ticket purchases.
Take your time and "shop around" and find the social media sites that work for you and your niche. This is my quick-start plan for social media domination in your niche...
1. Pick 3 sites (including one bookmarking site) and spend a few hours a week dedicated to building a presence in those three.
How do you choose those big 3? Well you have to know your market and where they hang out (very important). You will find a different crowd on LinkedIn vs. MySpace for the most part – so find out where you fit in.
For instance, my husband is a music producer and executive. Social media sites like MySpace make much more sense for him because a lot of aspiring musicians, producers, and performers gravitate towards that site. Also, most of them are young. And in his business youth is key.
It's much different for me. If you are reading this article right now, you are probably an entrepreneur, coach, author, or speaker. You are all about making money and increasing your visibility. You could be almost any age, but I tend not to attract really young musician types. So I gravitate towards more "networking" sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.
2. Start building casual relationships with people on these sites. Now I don't mean you should go on a site and start talking about your in-laws:) What I mean is that you should keep the conversation on and around your topic without selling them. That's what affiliate marketers are doing. You don't need to do that right now because you want to build solid long-term relationships that will produce income over the long haul.
3. Add fresh content like articles to these sites automatically and regularly. I use my own special brand of easy social article marketing to ensure that I am penetrating my niche via social media sites with minimal time on my part.
When I write new articles, they are automatically posted to my social media sites so that my friends and followers can read my latest tips and info.
Remember not everyone is going to stop by your site or even read your fabulous newsletter every week, but many of these people would die if they didn't check on their Twitter account daily. So the key of course is -- reach them where they are!
