Direct sales or direct selling is a good way of making some neat profit by working from home. However, there are quite a few things to keep in mind while you join a direct selling program. Desperate times force you to desperate actions -- like joining ponzi or pyramid schemes. Direct selling, also known as MLM & network marketing is a legitimate business opportunity. Ponzi and pyramid schemes are illegal to join.

Keep in mind, the following seven tips to start a legitimate home-based business.

1. Look at the performance of the company

Only legitimate companies can offer you legitimate business opportunities. Inquire where the company is located, how long has it been in business and the overall business conditions. A company that has an experience of five years or more is almost always a good choice. However, new companies with good financials also make good choices.

2. Learn about the products

Check if the company sells products that people buy and use. If they don't have legitimate products, chances are you will lose your money. Check if there is a real market for the products the company sells. Make sure the products/services are affordable. Also make sure you sell products you yourself would like to use. If you will not use the products, others won't either.

3. Consider joining costs

Is the startup kit affordable? If the entry cost is very high, you may not want to sign up. Check whether you can join the company by paying a reasonable sum. If you find it difficult to join, you will find it difficult to recruit too.

4. What is the commission?

How much will you make per sale is another factor to consider. Most successful direct selling companies distribute 50% of the price as commissions to the distributors. The commission structure should also be simple to understand.

5. How much will you make for recruiting team members?

The biggest attraction of direct selling is the chance to recruit and develop a team. You will receive a certain percentage of commission that individuals in your team make. That is, you can make profits from the efforts of people you have recruited for the company. Check whether you have good chances and ample opportunities of making big amounts as residual income.

6. Do you get support from your sponsor/the company?

Does the company encourage sponsors to help new recruits? This is important; as new recruits can easily lose interest in the business if they don't get support. Make sure the direct marketing company has a policy to keep the recruits motivated.

7. Understand everything about the company, the business and the plans.

You need to have a good understanding of the company, its products and its business plan. How can you explain the commission structure to new recruits if you don't understand it in the first place? Learn everything you need to about the business opportunity before you plunge.

Avoid the Ponzi schemes, but get the direct selling opportunities that can give you a legitimate business opportunity. The above seven tips should help you get started with your direct selling business.
