Is your practice satisfying for you? Have you been able to build it to a comfortable level and then have it come to a plateau? Being a solopreneur is very different than working for an agency or a business. Many times, however, people transition out of the corporate world with a dream and end up becoming an employee in their own practice, trading in one job for another.

When I first thought of having my own practice, I believed I was going to do it all myself. I was working with my clients as well as the behind the scenes operations of my practice. According to Michael Gerber, author of The E-Myth Revisited, I wanted to be the entrepreneur, technician and manager.

Quickly I realized not only was there not enough time in the day to do it all, many times there was not even enough time in the week to get everything done. I was working all the time, doing a lot of tasks which were not my strengths and not fun for me. Continuing at that pace, would have lead to burn out.

Like many solopreneurs, I needed to do it all. Having total control felt necessary, after all I was just starting out. I demanded a certain level of excellence and knew I could provide it, no matter how long it took. Why wait for someone else to take action when I can do it myself? All tasks got done according to my timeline. Training someone else to do it my way would take time. Doing everything was going to save me money.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

I realized that I was getting in the way of my own success. I had to change the way I operated my practice if I wanted to reach my goals. Although parts were unfamiliar to me, I was open to doing what was necessary.

As you begin taking the steps necessary to grow your practice, change will happen. Become aware of your mindset and how your perception affects your progress. Underlying beliefs impact the growth of your practice. Being receptive to examining your beliefs is making a choice for positive change.

These are five limiting beliefs which prevent a solopreneur from having a successful, growing practice.

1.Being a lone ranger is typical of many sole business owners. Although many solopreneurs do it all themselves and have a thriving business, this is actually a lack mentality according to the law of attraction. This mindset perceives a lack of resources. This perception stems from desire to be in control of everything, not trusting others to do the work or not having enough money to hire help. Do these sound familiar? You can only do so much in any given period of time. Believing you need to do everything on your own is very constrictive.

2.Belief that you can grow on your own. As much as you might want to be, most sole practitioners are not an "island unto themselves." Viable practices are connected to the community in which they exist, whether it is virtual or physical. There is a difference in the mindset of a solopreneur which bases business on competition versus collaboration.

3.The inner critic which prevents you from taking action outside of your comfort zone. Isolated solopreneurs continue to maintain old beliefs and perceptions. There is familiarity in doing things as you have always done them. It is comfortable. When you avoid making changes are you doing this for the benefit of you or your client? Maintaining a mindset which avoids change affects you as well as the value your clients receive from doing business with you. Adaptation is necessary for a business to survive. Grow to accommodate the needs of your ideal client and the economy.

4.Having a "yes, but or "I can't" attitude stops progress dead in its tracks. There are so many reasons why you are not doing things differently although it would benefit your practice and your clients. Once you become aware of your excuses, do you continue to use them? Are you receptive to understanding the underlying resistance? You only need to do one thing differently in order to begin making a change. You can continue with the familiar story that resists change. Change from saying "yes, but" and "I can't" to "yes, how" and "I will." Try it and see the effect it has for you.

5.Continue to be connected to your story of all the reasons why things don't change. People tend to be storytellers. Have you woven a story about why things are a certain way in your life and your business? The story has been told in one way so often that you might not even recognize you are telling a story. There is always more than one way of looking at things, no matter what the circumstances. If you were able to step out of your story and look at it from a different point of view, how would it change things for you?

Change is possible, whether on your own or with the support of others. Growth of your practice is likely to happen faster when you have a support system in place. Most people are not able to identify their own limiting beliefs. It is difficult to address a constrictive mindset as quickly on your own as you can with the right support. The growth of your practice is directly related to your mindset.
