When a student finds themselves entering college, they also inherit many new responsibilities that come with the move. One of these responsibilities can include getting a credit card. An often overlooked, but mostly beneficial move, getting a credit card and exercising discipline with the card is a great way to prepare a student for managing monies later on in life.

When looking for a good first time credit card for a student, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, the student should create a budget for themselves. A budget will create a structure for the student to know when payments are due and how much money they need to have set aside for credit card payments. Even though one can meet the minimum payment requirements, it would behoove the student to instead make larger payments whenever possible.

With a credit card, a student can afford some luxuries, within reason, and still maintain their payments to the credit card company. This would allow the student to build a better credit score and would also enable them to establish a good line of credit for future loans and credit card applications.

An important part of maintaining a credit card as a student is one's ability to make their payments on time. There are certain signs to look out for that will tell you whether or not you are keeping up with your payments. Some of these signs can include only being able to afford the minimum repayment amount each month. This could be a sign that you cannot afford to maintain the credit card fees. A student should strive to pay more than the minimum for each payment.

Another important sign to watch out for when gauging your ability to juggle payments is whether you are using one credit card to pay off another. This is a blatant sign of financial insecurity and you need to focus on one card at a time with produced funds, instead of paying for it with a different card. This situation can lead to disastrously high interest rates when companies get irritated that you miss or are late with payments.

There are many services out there for students to use when they first get a credit card. One of the best services to keep in mind is credit card protection. Credit card protection means the company that will work through a registration service to help the student cancel any reportedly stolen or missing credit cards. This would let the student be able to avoid incurring any fees or bills from credit card usage that was not their own.

One of the best aspects of the credit card protection services is that when a student reports their card missing, the company immediately tracks down any purchases made up until that point and nulls them out, flagging the card the next time someone tries to use it. As well as flagging the card for the police, the company makes it so that the student only has to pay a minor fee for a replacement card, ensuring that the credit card is properly restored to its rightful owner with minimum issues.

As well as providing you with services to replace credit cards, many student service credit card companies offer special privileges to students while the student is still in school. Some services offer a percent of cash back on your spending, granting a small return on your purchases. On top of the cash back offer, some credit card companies offer special rewards to good students, giving the students points towards rewards and offers in the future. Some of these rewards can come from maintaining a high GPA, as well as accomplishing satisfactory work in school.

In the context of appealing aspects about student credit cards, a visually appealing style can be added to your card, either personalized by the student themselves or by the company. For instance, Discover offers their students the ability to customize the looks of their card.

Besides the looks themselves, many credit card companies offer customizable payment plans. You can choose a 0% introductory APR with some companies, which means you do not incur an interest on payments or balances or transactions for a set amount of months.

Overall, a student can benefit greatly from paying for a credit card while in school. The offer of no introductory APR is astounding, and the ability for a student to better their credit score is a great opportunity to have while maintaining a relatively small amount of bills while still in school.
