The credit crunch is a worldwide phenomenon that has affected real estate sales in nearly every market and around the world. Homeowners are looking at home improvements rather than selling their homes and moving up to properties that have more of the features they want or need. In this time of recession, the home improvement business is actually very stable, even growing, while most other businesses are seeing their volumes shrink.

Instead of buying that bigger, more energy efficient domicile, people are opting to add conservatories or room additions to enlarge their living spaces. They are making those improvements that improve the energy efficiency of their residences, improvements like painting, added insulation, better weather-stripping, improved entry systems and doors, installing replacement windows that are more weather-tight and are glazed with insulating, double-pane glass, applying roof sealing materials and making other building modifications.

The advantages for the homeowner are many, not the least of which is a renewed interest in their home fueled by the work being done. The improvements will also increase the real property value as well as reduce the cost of utilities; gas and electricity, need to cook food and make the living quarters comfortable.

New entry doors and replacement windows, as well as being very attractive, reduce the energy requirements of the home by tightening the building envelope. The better weather seal provided by modern windows and doors, coupled with the double-pane, insulating glass reduces draftiness and abates exterior noise infiltration, as well as requiring far less maintenance. Conveniences built into modern windows are also attractive; tilt-in sashes for ease of cleaning, integral insect screens, security locks and a wide variety of other features.

Window and door framing material may be of the following: Steel, wood, aluminum or vinyl (PVC). Steel frames are currently used mainly for security or detention windows, but replacement residential windows may be framed with wood, thermal-break aluminum or most commonly with PVC. Modern wool-pile weather stripping with Mylar fins have made windows and doors much less prone to air infiltration around the doors or sashes, so any framing material will be energy efficient. The homeowner's choice can then be made on price and aesthetics, rather than which is the most energy efficient.

There are many home improvement companies available if you research on the internet. Many are offering discounted rates and flexible payment terms. A conservatory will add great value to your home and will be a great selling point if do do wish to sell your home in the future.
