Management consultants are involved in a growing number of businesses and business needs. Consultants can be called upon to provide objective advice, expertise and skills with the goal of creating value, maximizing growth or improving the business performance of their clients. Businesses want consultants to focus primarily on the strategy, structure, management and operations of an organization.

By identifying issues and creating solutions, consultants can assist business owners with the implementation of needed changes. With the current economic climate, companies are using consultants more and more to stay competitive and efficient as the business market continues to change. Business is not the same as it was ten years ago and companies are being forced to evaluate their structure and operations that has always worked in the past. Using a consultant enables companies to get the information they need from an impartial, outside source while saving the cost of adding a permanent employee. Consultants can expect to be a jack of all trades and offer a variety of services.

Management consultancy requires a primarily entrepreneurial spirit and drive, even when working within an consultancy firm. Other necessary skills include excellent communication, time management, good judgement, and the strong ability to work with a wide variety of people. As a leader guiding a company through possibly uncomfortable changes, the people will have to be able to understand the reasons for the change and be willing to follow your lead. The best leaders always have a vision and the exceptional ability to communicate that vision. The same is true for management consultants.

As management consulting utilizes the entrepreneurial spirit, a great number of consultants are self employed and/or start their own consultancy firm. The start up costs of a consultancy firm are low. When a consultant is self employed, it is critical to network and stay current. The Institute of Management Consultants UK is a good source for professional development programs and resources. This includes support such as workshops and meetings. This support is helpful to consultants in their efforts to stay up to date and to continue to better themselves in the consulting field. The opportunities are numerous for quality management consultants both of entry and senior levels.

Currently, there are many opportunities for both people wanting to work on a self employed basis and for those who have made redundant and may have the funds to start a small business. Many of these opportunities can be found on a variety of specialist Internet Job boards and Job sites that have a category for Management Consultants.
