The publishing industry has gone through massive changes over the last couple decades. More and more content is staring to show up online. It does not matter whether you are talking about a newspaper, a magazine or a book and whether it is presented in hard copy or online, the basic publishing jobs are still critical when it comes to bringing the written word to the targeted audience.
People who have a passion for expressing themselves through the written word are obviously perfect candidates for writer positions. Depending on the nature of the content, many writers work on a freelance basis from somewhere other than the home base of the publication. In some cases they are hired to work from the office.
Copy editors are responsible for making sure that the copy turned in by the writers is grammatically correct. They will review all copy before the publication goes to the printer. Language experts who know when to use a semi colon and where the commas belong in a sentence are ideal candidates for this position.
The managing editor will assign work to writers and orchestrate the gathering of material for the finished product. They will check over all the copy and do rewrites when necessary. Managing editors must be extremely organized, able to handle several tasks simultaneously and enjoy working with others.
Fact checkers will verify that any information contained in the final piece is factually correct. Proofreaders will do a final read through of everything. The goal is to make sure there are no typos or missing or misplaced text.
Graphic designers will use their creative talents to lay out pages in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. They have experience choosing appropriate fonts, typefaces, borders, headlines and more. Many have a background in art.
This just a few of the many jobs found in the publishing field. There are also marketing managers, advertising salesman, circulation personnel and customer service representatives. Depending on individual strengths and skills there is a position in the publishing industry that will suit most anyone.
The great thing about working in publishing is that you are often surrounded by other like minded intelligent people, so going out for lunch or for a beer after work is a lot more fun. Publishing careers can be highly rewarding and many senior executives earn substantial six and in some cases seven figure salaries. People in the publishing world also have great power and influence and can change the way people view the world in both a positive and negative manner.
