Internet marketing is only effective when the steps are done right. Otherwise, you may find that your time and efforts are wasted without getting the results you expect. Here are ten internet marketing strategy mistakes that must be avoided.

1) Slow download time. If your website takes a long time to download, you'll most likely be losing your prospects. People simply don't have the time, and the patience to wait for a site to completely load. If your site takes an entire a minute to complete, viewers will close their browser or check out a different website immediately.

2) Using complex programs. Does your website make use of flash programs? If so, make sure there is an HTML version available. Not all internet users have Macromedia Flash on their computer.

3) Focusing solely on internet marketing. Internet marketing is a great tool in promoting your business. However, don't forget the importance of offline marketing as well. Not everyone spends their time online and not everyone is familiar with your website.

4) Overlooking the importance of search engine listings. Enlisting in search engines and directories can take some of your time but it's all worth it. If people can't find your website on major search engines, you're missing a big opportunity of reaching out to your target market.

5) Not updating your website. If you're not updating your website, you'll be losing your customers and you won't be making new customers either. The online competition is tough and if you want to keep up with other online businesses, you have to constantly provide fresh content on your site.

6) Partnering with the wrong affiliations. Not all affiliates online are worthy of your alliance. Before signing up with any affiliate company, make sure you've done enough research on the company's background.

7) Imposing complicated procedures. Make sure that everything on your website is simple and easy to follow. For instance, if a person wants to subscribe to your newsletter, don't make him fill-up an entire page of information. Providing his name and email address should be enough to get him signed up on your newsletter.

8) Overlooking the power of viral marketing. Viral marketing is the power of "word of mouth" done online. Including recommendation buttons on every page of your website can make a big difference for your online business. Buttons such as "forward this", "share this", or "invite a friend" are just some examples of viral marketing tools every online marketer should use.

9) Not having an opt-in list. Every time an internet user visits your site, take the opportunity to ask for their e-mail. When they voluntarily provide their e-mail address, you can send them updates without spamming.

10) Never spam. Don't be tempted to send an e-mail that is unsolicited. Always ask permission first before sending to an e-mail. When a customer subscribes to your newsletter, make sure that there is an "unsubscribe" button if they want to be taken out of your list. Furthermore, don't bombard your subscriber with too many e-mails that they would want to unsubscribe. Send only e-mails at right intervals.
