Adobe InDesign is not a newcomer to anyone who works in the fields of publishing, advertising or any other line of work which involves layout, typesetting or the more production related portions of the graphic design process. It's a powerful suite of tools for desktop publishing and design which offers users an enormous number of options and generally, more than one way to get the task at hand done.
The latest version of InDesign is CS5, the version number coinciding with the latest edition of the Adobe Creative Suite (namely, CS5). The new version offers a number of upgrades and new features which set it apart from the previous version, Indesign CS4. The new version is more than an incremental upgrade, offering significant improvements which help InDesign users get the job done better and faster. Keep reading for a quick rundown of some of the most important new features in InDesign CS5.
A Redesigned Layers Panel:
The Layers panel in the latest version of InDesign has been redesigned to more closely resemble the look and feel of the Layers panel in Illustrator in order to more closely integrate InDesign CS5 with the rest of the Adobe Creative Suite. The user now has the option of using a disclosure triangle feature which can show the objects on each layer as well as their stacking order. New page items can also be given custom names easily through the new Layers panel. The stacking order of layer objects can also be changed with ease; just drag and drop the items in the list to change the order in the layer itself.
Multiple Page Sizes:
InDesign CS5 makes it possible to work with multiple page sizes within a single document, saving the user the time and trouble of creating content with different page sizes as separate documents and then integrating them into a book file after the fact. This new feature is a boon to designers working on brochures and other documents where creativity and eye-catching design is mission critical. Custom page sizes can also be set through a user-friendly dialogue box, which also saves users no small amount of time.
Span and Split Columns:
One of the biggest complaints InDesign users, especially those working in publishing, have had about the program historically has been that they needed to create separate text frames in order to have text span or split across columns. However, Adobe has finally addressed this shortcoming in InDesign CS5. This new feature alone has led to many users deciding to upgrade to the newest version of InDesign.
There are a host of new and upgraded features in InDesign CS5 and the list here only scratches the surface. From easier integration of multimedia content into InDesign documents to quicker and easier layout for advertisements, magazines and books, CS5 is much more than an upgrade; it's a giant leap forward for this desktop publishing workhorse which is sure to attract many new users.
