Adobe Photoshop is a very versatile and easy to learn program. It has many capabilities and can open most common file types as well as create many others. Being able to handle one image type made in another program and edit it in another was one of the main selling points for Photoshop in its early days.
The six most commonly used file extensions that can be opened or created by Photoshop are .PSD (Photoshop Format), .JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), .GIF (CompuServe Graphic Interchange Format), .BMP (Bitmap), .PNG (Portable Networks Graphic), and .TIFF (Tagged Image File Format). There are many other file types that the program can create but these are the most common and most widely used. Each one has its own unique uses and is better suited for certain situations.
Let's start with the most common file type which is the .JPEG. Everyone uses and sees these whenever they use a computer regardless of if the are aware of it or not. JPEG's are the jack of all trades when it comes to image files. While they excel at no particular aspect they are recognized by most programs making them easy to use. There are many levels of quality in this picture type which makes it good for limited storage.
Next in line is the .PSD. This is Photoshop's own file format and is recognized by other high end programs in the industry. It can hold more data than other file types and is suitable for making high quality textures as well as vivid images. However it's not quite suited for all applications. After this we have the .GIF extension. GIF's are broken up into two categories which are stills and animations.
Still GIF's provide high details and allow for multiple layers and animated GIF's allow you to string a chain of images together in order to make a small animation. If you've been to a website with interactive content chances are you've seen them. They can be compacted down to very small resolutions and sizes making them good for small quick animations. They can also be very large at times if you want longer high quality animations.
The bitmap or .BMP is one of the texture types that is primarily used in the gaming industry. Bitmaps have long been used for making textures in video games and CGI movies and while they are starting to show their age they are still heavily used. They work well at odd resolution levels which makes them ideal for textures in game engines, modeling programs, and anything else that requires a specific range of image data.
Next is the .PNG file format. These are meant for optimized transmission and reception over networks meaning that they are small and often low quality. However their small size makes them ideal for web pages and limited bandwidth networks. This leaves us with the .TIFF format. Tiff's are images that have additional information stored in them and are used for complex image systems. They often have multiple layers and are utilized for complex texturing, photography, or specialized animations.
Each file type has their own unique use and function. A .BMP will work well for a gaming texture but a .PNG would not. Likewise animated GIF's cannot be substituted with a .TIFF file. Learning the ins and outs of each file format takes time but they are all needed in the industry. Mastering using these basic types can make you a proficient user in the program and a highly desired commodity.
