Getting into web design is a good path to take whether you are doing it for fun or you want to think ahead for the best interests of future businesses. Individuals and companies alike are embracing the digital age and see the benefits of sharing information by posting content on websites. But in order to make these sharing efforts worthwhile, the website should look nice considering the millions of other websites that are available online that may tackle similar content. Making a decent website does not require much experience if you are exposed to the right software tools or online services but if you want to really exercise your own creative skills and turn them into fully functional websites, you must have these skills.
Layouting Skills
Every page in a website no matter how decorative it looks follows a certain layout. This is important because the site layout governs the placement of the content and other elements. Some areas of the layout may have text while others will have graphics, images, and other forms of multimedia. Coming up with a good layout is necessary to keep your audience within the experience. A good layout ensures that the visitor does not get confused when reading the content from top to bottom. Links should be visible if there is a need to proceed to another part of the website. Good layouting skills also involve good sitemap creation skills. You can create a good sitemap if you plan the structure of your site in flowchart form. Once you identify all of the pages in your site, you can start creating dedicated layouts for each page. This will serve as a basis for bringing your site to life.
Graphic Design Skills
Now that you have the framework, you can start creating mockups where you will import any design elements that you can think of. The objective is to keep the intended layout as is while adding some visual flair to make the site more appealing than the other sites. You can start by creating a color scheme so knowledge on what colors look good together is also necessary and part of graphics design. If you want to be completely original, you will need to design any buttons, headers, banners, and other site elements that will perk up your site.
Photo Editing Skills
If your website will feature photos and images, it is also good to have photo editing skills so you can optimize the look of the photo for the web. This involves keeping the file size low while preserving the quality and making some fine edits to remove flaws and artifacts.
Coding Skills
The three skills mentioned earlier is purely for conceptual and mockup purposes. But having these three skills has its advantages when you really need to craft your website. All you need is the coding knowledge to put all the graphic elements and layouts together. If you used the previous skills to get yourself organized, you have a reference on what your site should look like. HTML serves as the basic while knowing other languages such as JavaScript and PHP give you flexibility for creating exactly the site you want.
