I love cooking with quinoa, but I remember well when I first heard about this ancient grain on a TV show. I was excited to give it a try and figure out how to cook quinoa until I walked into my local grocery store and saw that a tiny little box of it was almost $6. That was just a little outside my budget for something that I thought would quickly become a staple in my kitchen.

I went ahead and bought it anyway, just to give it a try. We loved the nutty flavor, the versatility and of course the nutritional benefits of quinoa. Next, I set out to try to find a way to buy this stuff cheaper, so we could eat it on a regular basis. Here are some tips on where to buy quinoa that have worked well for me.

I mostly end up buying quinoa in bulk. You can find it in local health food stores, and in Hispanic grocery stores. I've seen it in big barrels where you scoop out the amount you need and in two to five pound bags. Either way will be a lot less expensive than buying it in the small cardboard boxes you see at your regular grocery store.

I do still buy the boxed quinoa, if I can find a good coupon for it. Every once in a while, I come across a good coupon in my local Sunday paper. When I do, I stock up on as many boxes as I can. Keep an eye out for coupons in your own papers, or go to your grocery store and find out what brand they carry. Then visit the brand website to see if you can find some coupons there. Another option is to go to Google and do a search for the brand name and coupon or just "quinoa coupon".

Last but not least, you can find some great deals online for quinoa. Pay attention to shipping terms though. Depending on how much they charge to ship your quinoa to you that may eat up all your initial savings. I've found Amazon to be a pretty reliable source for quinoa.

As with anything, shop around and compare prices to find the best place for you to buy your quinoa. For me, the easiest and cheapest source is a local grocery store that offers quinoa in bulk. Then it's just a matter of starting to cook with this ancient South American grain. Give a few quinoa recipes a try and find some new family favorites.
