There are many things you should do in order to be successful. But, without incorporating these tips chances are you will not succeed in acheiving your lifes goals. Try to incorporate each tip by introducing them to your life one at a time. Make sure you have one done and fully integrated before you go to the next.

Tip #1 Stephen Covey in his book "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" says you should sharpen the saw before you do anything. He uses the analogy of cutting down a tree. It is much easier to cut down a tree if you first take the time to sharpen the saw. You will also do it faster and better. What he means is that you should do the things that put you into optimum health both physically, mentally, and spiritually in order for you to bring your best self to any task. Eat right, exercise, visit the doctor and dentist on a regular basis, read and learn constantly. Meditate or pray habitually. These things will make sure you are at your peak. Being at your peak will help you have the energy and mental clarity to do the best job possible. Always make sure that your saw is sharp.

Tip #2 How would you know if you were successful if you didn't know what you wanted to achieve. Knowing where you want to go is integral to success. That is where goal setting comes in.At the beginning of each year I like to spend time reviewing the previous year to see how I did and then plan the next year and make a list of goals I would like to accomplish. I try not to make to many because I find it to be somewhat overwhelming. Seven to eight usually works for me. I then write them down. I write it as though I have already achieved it with a date for when I want to complete that goal. For example: "I have $20,000 in the bank by December 31, 2009". Then I type my goals on a piece of paper the size of a business card and have it laminated. I carry it around with me everyday and at least twice I day I read my goals and visualize them completed. It is important to put emotion behind the visualization. So try to imagine what it feels like to achieve these goals. There is a lot of power behind this activity. It is like programming your brain so that it will consistently look for ways to achieve what you have set out to do.

Tip #3 I have had many salespeople work for me. Some are successful and some are not. Yet they all seem to be working hard. Some seem to work so hard that they are frequently overwhelmed. However no matter how hard a salesperson works it doesn't always translate in sales. Whenever I meet with the unsuccessful salesperson to discuss how they might improve I usually find the same conversation happens. They do not know why they aren't doing well. They work very hard. They believe in the product. They have a good attitude and are enthusiastic about what they do. Many times they are very organized and their paper work is in good order. So what is the problem? Why are they not successful? It is very simple. They do not make enough sales calls! These salespeople get so involved in the busy work of what they do that they do not focus on the key actions that are needed to accomplish their goals. OMG you may say, how simple. However this is something that I find again and again. The difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful person is the successful person makes sure that each day they do the key tasks that will propel them to achieve their goals. When you write your to do list for the day make sure that the key tasks you need to do are on your list. Put an "A" next to these to do's and do them first. If you do this and nothing else that I tell you, you will find that you successes grow exponentially.

Tip #4 I have had several mentors over the years. Without them I believe my career would have taken a very different turn. These mentors did several things for me. They taught me how to do my job better. They helped me avoid mistakes by advising me on my career. They even helped me learn to present myself in a more professional manner. Mentors will aid you on the path of your career.

Mentors can come from many areas. They can be your boss, a teacher, or even a career coach. You want someone who has achieved what you want to achieve. They already know the path and can guide you on the ins and outs of getting where you want to go. Cultivate these relationships. They are best when they are not a one way street. Figure out how you can be supportive to your mentor. Even if it is just occasionally buying them a lunch. You can also look for mentors outside your circle of acquaintances. Look at some of the most successful people in your field and see how you can contact them. Offer something in return for their mentorship. Maybe you can be their virtual assistant in return for their guidance.

Another plus of having a mentor is being with someone who is at a higher level than you. The more you surround yourself with people that are more successful than you the better off you are. There is a belief that you earn the average of the people you associate yourself with. So if money is a measure of success for you be with people who earn a lot of money.

Mentors cut the learning curve in a career substantially. Always be on the look out for them on your path to success and you will find yourself arriving at your destination earlier than planned.

Tip #5 Always be learning. It is said that the level of your success is in direct correlation to what you know. If that is true than it makes sense to always be learning. Read and study everything you can get your hands on that has to do with your industry. Do not limit yourself to this. I always read and listen to audio tapes on many different subjects. From time management to sales techniques to success principles. It helps to teach me skills so that I am as good as I can be. I always want to develop myself as an individual. It is like having a home that you are always taking care of . Cleaning, landscaping, redecorating, renovating, so that it is in the best shape possible.

Good luck using these tips on your path to success.
