A vacation is having nothing to do and all day to do it in. ~Robert Orben

When was the last time that you took a real vacation, one where you really forgot about work responsibilities, things needing doing around the house, one where you didn't focus on how much you were spending? Was it last year? Perhaps two years ago? Or maybe it was so long ago that you don't really care to remember?

It is a reality that we all need downtime. We need to re-charge our batteries, to let the world go by, and let go of the daily grind. We need space from the challenges of work. We need to free ourselves from time to time and be indulgent. Moreover, we owe it to our families to get away and spend time together.

I'm not talking about taking one week off. That fixes nothing. It takes most people at least one week to wind down and forget about work. Work is a stressor and you need to distance yourself from that for a sufficient amount of time in order to give both your mind and body the breaks they need.

I know so many people who have incredible amounts of holiday and long-service leave owing to them that they have put aside for a 'rainy day'! What rainy day? We are living in the now! The future is not steeped in reality. It may in fact, never come. Maybe no-one has thought to remind the procrastinators that they won't be able to use this leave once they are officially dead!

I don't jest here! The notion that people are indispensable is of endemic proportions! And because people feel this way and, because they don't afford themselves release, they become stressed. And no-one needs to be reminded about what stress does to the body!

One middle-aged friend of mine felt he could only take two weeks off work after a heart attack. Why? And yes, that's exactly how much time he took off, two weeks. Had the attack killed him the company would have had to hire another engineer and let's face it, he would very soon have been forgotten, replaced by the new recruit. He would have become but a distant memory. Perhaps my friend will think more clearly after his next attack, because the fact is that people who work excessive hours each and every week are setting themselves up for heart problems!

But of course we cannot lay all blame on people. There is a tendency amongst companies to make all of us feel guilty about taking leave. Somehow our leave request is always made at the wrong time. Excuses abound, such as, - someone else has taken time off and your taking leave is frankly inconvenient. This is our busiest time and we have to get orders out. I could go on, but you get the picture!

It's a strange thing, but the notion of burnout leading to less productivity is rarely factored in by management these days, and yet the truth is that people who take real holidays, and lengthy breaks, the people who spend money with a certain amount of abandonment, come back energized and are able to produce much more in less time. Moreover, they want to do so! They have the energy, they have the drive, and most importantly, they have the commitment!

So, if you are thinking about taking a holiday, consider the facts I have discussed. Use them as your armoury when you approach your boss, and stand firm. Having holiday leave is not just your right. It is vital to your health. Take that time off! Have fun. Your family will love you and reward you accordingly. You'll be glad you made the decision!
