Money - it's probably one of the things we worry about most. We worry about paying the bills. We worry about not having enough to see us through the week. Let's face it, we have been conditioned to worry, and yet, the more concerned we are about money, the less of it we seem to have!
But when you think of it, in itself, money is virtually worthless. How many of us sit around counting our gold? A resounding none, I hear! That's from a long-gone era, and in its place are plastic notes and coins of indeterminate value. Those bits of plastic that allow us to trade, the coins that jangle in our pockets, the cheques we write, actually have no intrinsic value! They simply tell us that we can buy this or that, or something else.
So if we accept that this is the case, what we all need to do, is turn our thinking around and look on moolah as a tool for trading, and not an end in itself. This will allow us to see it from a different perspective.
You see we all want to be free of money worries. Many of us want to be wealthy. But if you boil it all down, not one of us wants to walk the streets weighed down by the yellow stuff! See, it's not the money itself that we want. Rather it is what we can do with it that's attractive - very attractive!
Being wealthy frees us to do so many things. With a healthy wallet we can travel and experience the world. We can buy good food and wine. We can impress our friends with our fancy homes, and send our kids to the best schools. With the leftovers we can indulge in benevolence, support worthy causes and assist people who are down on their luck. More importantly, being cashed up also has the ability to reduce our stress levels. We all know what stress can do to our lives!
However, if we truly want to be wealthy, what we must do is try to change our relationship with money. The principles are simple. Be assured that if you can follow them, there is a very good chance that you might just live more abundant lives.
How many of us stress over going to the post box, that little nondescript box that lives somewhere in our gardens? It looks pretty innocuous, but somehow it serves to attract fear into our lives.
Five days a week, give or take a public holiday, that little box waits, ready to accommodate whatever handouts the postman delivers. So many of us see it as a blessing if the mailbox is empty, because that means, no bills!
However, imagine how things might be if we could turn that thinking, that fear, that mounting pressure of bills around and instead, celebrate receiving them. It's hard to imagine, isn't it, because the reality is that we have grown used to worrying about them. It's in our psyche.
Let's think about all the bills we generally have to pay in our day-today living - the mortgage, or the rent, electricity, gas or school fees. Now instead of fretting over how many and how much you have to pay, why not celebrate and give thanks every time you actually honour the bills? In honouring them you will be sending a clear message of gratitude to the universe, a message that says you feel fortunate and grateful that you had enough money to do so. How fortunate are you!
Now let's take as a precise example, the day you pay your children's school fees. On that day cook a special dinner. Buy the kids a treat! And instead of knocking the teachers and grumbling about how much you have to pay for seemingly little, why not celebrate the fact that your children are being cared for and thriving - and that the school fees are paid?
Lately there have been so many monumental disasters featured in the media. They have left thousands homeless and destitute. It will be many months, perhaps years, before the people affected are ever self-sufficient. The scarring will be indelibly marked in their psyche.
So the question I ask is, how many of you have dug deep and donated past your comfort level? If you haven't, do so! It is one thing to have gratitude for paying your bills and thriving, but you also have a duty to give back generously - and that's right, to give until it hurts. You can afford it! Trust me!
One thing you might notice in your journey is that your attitude to others may be slowly changing. If you have had the tendency to resent other people's wealth, status, or wellbeing, your attitude should gradually shift to one of warmth towards them for having been so fortunate. This must happen because it is vitally important that you don't leave your inner self open to impoverishment. That will get you nowhere. Celebrating the successes of others is a vital component of your journey!
And now you must develop a healthy, balanced relationship with money, using it for precisely what you want and need. Money can so easily disappear from our grasp and so, you need to constantly ask yourself whether there might be an easier, perhaps less expensive way of doing something, when tempted to spend.
Setting some financial goals might be a way of doing this. Then, when temptation strikes, as it will, consult your goals and ascertain whether spending is in alignment with them.
Be assured that prosperity and abundance will come to you when you learn to love and nourish the prosperity in others, and to align your spending with your goals.
