Have you had an insurance company complaint? If you feel your own claim was not handled quickly and fairly, you deserve to get some answers and help with your problem. Learn some simple steps to take that may help you settle your issue with an insurer the fast and simple way.
I present three steps to take here. I believe I presented the easiest and quickest solution first, and then lead up to a more complicated solution you could consider as a last resort.
The first thing you should do is call your insurance company. Make sure you understand exactly how they came to the decision that you disagree with. Also make sure that your insurer understands what your complaint is. This can help you in a couple of ways.
There could have been an error. This is more common than you think it is! Sometimes a simple phone call will get a representative to take a second look at your claim so it can get resolved in the fastest way possible. They could simply have to correct a coding error in their forms.
If there is no error, but the way the claim was settled came down to an insurance adjuster decision, you may get them to be a bit more generous. A polite phone call, explaining the situation, can get an adjuster to modify the settlement.
If you understand the issue, but cannot get your insurer to help you, it may be time to get help from a third party. Your first resource is your own state insurance department. Every US state has an insurance department, and the reason they exist is to enforce insurance laws and protect consumers. You should be able to find contact information by searching on the web for your state's insurance department.
They will ask you for more information, and they may ask you to send a letter with details about your problem. Be assured that most state regulatory bodies are very eager to look into consumer complaints, and they will get back to you with more answers.
Have you tried calling your insurer and state insurance department, and you still have not gotten your issue settled? Now may be the time to look for legal help. Some lawyers will give you a free consultation. An experienced lawyer should be familiar with cases that are very similar to yours. They can help you understand your options.
Lawyers are expensive, but many will work on a contigency basis. This means that they will agree to get paid if they win. Challenging an insurer in court is going to take time, and that is why I suggest it as a last resort. But if an experienced lawyer believes you have a good case, then this is one way to get your problem resolved.
You pay money for your premiums every month. When you have a claim, you have a right to get it settled in a fair and swift manner. I hope that these tips can help you resolve any issues you may have had with an insurer.
