Is an economic downturn a good time to start a home business?

You may think that a recession, when money is tight, would be a bad time to start a new business venture. But there are many products and services that are in demand when times are hard. Many people have lost their jobs and really need an extra income too. And of course, there are many home businesses that you can start without a lot of extra money!

Think about what people need during hard money situations. Wives may need to go back to work, and husbands may need to pick up a second job. There is sure to be an extra demand for child and elder care when more people must leave their homes to earn more income. Even pets need to be tended, and so pet sitters and dog walkers can find a demand for their services.

People still need to eat. While they are working extra hours they may lack time to prepare good meals, but do not want the expense of eating out all the time. Meal delivery services have done well during these times.

And people want to save money, plus make the best use of money they have already saved. If you can help people do these things, and you can do it an affordable price, you can probably prosper.

Financial professionals and insurance agents who specialize in helping people save and conserve their money can find plenty of clients during an economic downturn.

Maybe those things seem to hard, but you do not have to be a rocket scientist to start a home business.

Can you mow a lawn and tidy up a yard? Your working neighbors would probably be willing to pay you a reasonable price to help them out. Can you fix things. During tight money and credit times, people would rather fix things than replace them. If you can mend a fence, paint a wall, or get a garabage disposal unstuck, you may prosper as a handyman.

Freelancing work has boomed too. Some freelancing work, like computer programming, takes special skills. But freelance writers, who can right about general topics, are hired by webmasters to provide content for websites. It is fairly simple to research these topics on the internet, or at the library. Then if you have access to a word processor with a spell checker, and an internet connection, you can begin to make money at home. And some freelance work, available online, is even simpler than this.

How do you market your home business? It does not have to cost a lot to advertise. Sometimes a simple phone number, written on a sign or flyer, will be all you need. You can also find classified ads websites, webmster forums, and a variety of places to promoe yourself. One of the simplest methods used offline is simply to place flyers in car windows at a large shopping center near you home. Just be careful not to violate any posted rules about doing this.

So is a recession a good time to work at home? Well, while micro-business has seen an increase, the traditional employment rate has been dismal. Almost anybody can find a way to raise money if they are willing to be flexible and creative.
