Want to know the fastest way to master the skill of guitar string muting? This article will discuss this important technique.

String muting is a relevant method that may assist you in defining your own individual style. It consists of 2 basic types of string muting, the palm mute with your plectrum hand and the string mute with your fret hand. These two types serve absolutely distinct purposes, but both are essential to skillful guitar playing.

Fret-hand muting especially comes into play ,while playing chords and power chords. You should use part of you finger tips and fingers to mute the strings you do not need to include in the chord being played. For instance the C major chord is played from the fifth string to the first, your are not supposed to hit the sixth string. I recommend you use the tip of your third finger that's holding downward the fifth string third fret to rub up against the sixth string thereby muting the string. You should use this method with power chords. You should also use the chubby part of your forefinger to gently lay across strings 1,2,3. with precisely sufficient force to mute the strings. The wonderful thing is if you get a little bit carried away with your plectrum, it'll still sound good. Fret-hand muting is used extensively.

Palm muting is more generally applied in distorted rock songs. The method requires resting the heel of your pick-hand palm on the strings as you pluck. Nearly all guitar players rest it straight over the bridge, but you'll be able to try out various positionings for diverse sounds. You should attempt several degrees of pressure to determine the level of muting. This method produces a percussive, toned down or chunky sound. Merge fast downwardly strokes with palm muting in varied patterns with mild distortion for sounds alike to Metallica. Kirk Hammett uses string muting to great effect on 'Nothing Else Matters' and 'The Day That Never Comes'.

The techniques of both fret hand muting and palm muting are very personal and rhetorical. By applying and integrating this method on a daily basis, you will get the hang of this essential skill in the shortest time.

You now have a better understanding of what string muting is. You know there are 2 types. Apply this newfound knowledge in your guitar playing. You also need to watch how the professionals do it. Copy them but create your own unique guitar sound.Go on, champ!
