Shakespeare said, "All the world is a stage and all the men and women merely players". If he were around today he might say that all the world is a blog and all the men and women merely bloggers.

Blogs have been is existence since about 1997. They were first used by people who had a strong understanding of the Internet and how to create web pages from mere code. Their original purpose was to pass on information to colleagues and friends about content and interesting sites on the web.

Eventually weblogs transformed into what they are today: a medium for personal diaries, political opinion, news analysis, commentaries on professional expertise or even as a showcase for your pet. For every conceivable interest there is a blog.

According to Technorati, there are approximately 113 million blogs worldwide. Whether that figure is accurate or not is open to debate as there is no standard way of counting blogs. Regardless, I would suggest that you add another blog to that count, which is yours.

For most people, blogging is a great way to express themselves but for some it is also a way to earn extra income. Anyone who has a business or I even thinking about starting a business should strongly consider starting their own blog. A blog is an excellent medium for passing along information. Write about your business. Write about your area of expertise. If you have a website you can direct people to visit. If you have a regular brick and mortar operation you can tell people about products, services, locations or special offers. Use your imagination

Other sources of income from a blog can come from using your blog to place advertisements from other businesses. Google adsense is the most common advertisement network. There are also other advertising networks besides Google; Linkshare, Kanoodle and ValueClick are just a few. Of course, if you like a lot of work you can arrange your own advertising, but you would need to find the accounts and provide all the support. Not a small task.

Making your blog available only through subscriptions is also another income producing possibility In order to do that you would need to provide content for which people would be willing to pay. I do know of a young lady in Brazil who became rich and a celebrity by providing details on her blog of her exploits as a high priced escort.

Finally, you could request donations on your blog; sort of an electronic form of begging. I've never tried it but, who knows, it may work. At least you might be able to pay for your hosting costs. On the other hand, if you are blogging for a charity or non-profit organization this would be perfectly acceptable.

Blogging can be an adventure, a form of therapy, a way to contact the world, meet new friends and influence people.
