When you start experiencing stress on your feet from exercise, too much walking, or an injury, then you should probably start assessing ways to ease the pain. Did you know shoe orthotics are used by millions of people every day? Many of them are over the counter too. Only about 25 percent of people have a "normal" foot pattern and the rest have slight to severe abnormalities in their stride. Your feet should land properly. When they do not, the wrong heel landing can cause injury and discomfort. Some problems are solvable just from resting the foot. Others require inserts and comfort shoes. How do you know when it is appropriate to buy them?

Orthopedic shoes and insoles help with conditions like plantar fasciitis, blisters, shinsplints, and unbalanced leg lengths. You can assume that the majority of these complications come from the fact that you have placed an unusual amount of pressure on a certain ligament, muscle, or joint. The pressure causes rips, tears, and breaks that lead to discomfort.

Before you go running to get inserts for your shoes or specially made shoes from a cobbler or something, take a look at the shoes that you're already wearing. Do they fit properly? You would be amazed to know how many people buy shoes that are too snug or too big just because they don't take enough time trying them out before they purchase them. When trying on a new pair, see how your foot slides. Is there enough room for the toes? Make sure the bottom of the shoe fits to your arches and if it does not then ask if you can buy arch supports to place inside them to make up the difference.

Also, if you find that your current shoes are the cause of the pain you need to change them (or at least stop wearing them so often). Alternating shoes actually prevents injuries because they will not wear so quickly and your foot will not fall into the same heel landing patterns depending on the materials and structure of the footwear.

Consult physicians if need be, but also start researching custom running or walking orthotics. The proper cushioning can make all the difference. Form fitting insoles and supports, like those made with gel, are found to be very effective in ailing pain. Take your time and test out different products. Everybody's feet are a little different so it may take a few tries before you fit a perfect match.
