The internet is like the modern version of the printing press. It has changed the way the world works and its effects are still being felt. That said, it's important to have a grasp on how the internet can benefit you and your small business. Read on for more information.

Blogs: A blog is more than a website to talk about what you ate for dinner last night; it's a place to display content that's relevant to your industry , which will make your small business more authoritative in the eyes of a search engine. Today, Google remains the biggest search engine. It respects fresh, consistently posted and highly relevant content. It can be hard to write Ph.D. worthy blog posts every day, which is why it's important to supplement your blog with other sources of information.

Links: For a long time, links were the best way to improve your search engine marketing. But after it became apparent that people simply posted their links in forums all over the internet, Google changed its algorithm. Today, it's important to have links to your website and blog on widely-viewed websites places such as in comments sections on large online periodicals. Similarly, if you have friends or know of anyone who wants to post your link in exchange for his, feel free to do so.

Social Media: Facebook and Twitter are very powerful companies. Facebook is pretty easy - create a fan page and invite your friends to start liking you. Once you have twenty-five likes, you can change your url to a custom one, which will benefit your search engine marketing. Obviously, the more likes you have the more popular you'll be. Twitter is a tad more difficult. You want people to follow you without having to follow them - such is the goal of the Twitterati. In order to do that you have to post relevant or funny tweets all the time. It's a lot of work, and if your tweets start to get boring or uninteresting, you can be sure that you'll lose some followers. There are programs, such as TweetAdder and FollowBack, that allow you to gain followers in exchange for you following them. For those of us who aren't celebrities, this may be the next best way to reach five hundred followers.

Try to get a handle on these three areas of online marketing and you'll soon see a major improvement in your search engine marketing. Or, you can hire one of the many online marketing companies to do this stuff for you. It is a difficult process that takes time, so make sure to find a reputable and trustworthy company.
