With so many options available to you and so little time each morning, you may be thinking, "How do I establish a balance between my jewelry and my clothing?" When you're tired and your brain is still a little fuzzy from exiting dreamland in the morning it may be easy to make common fashion mistakes. Some things to focus on are amount, materials, color, and size. Simple enough, right?

Let's begin with the discussion on the amount of jewelry. Believe it or not, even if you are wearing a very simple outfit you should not be using a bundle of jewelry. Pick maybe one or two key items and work around those. You do not need to be wearing several layers of necklaces and around ten bangles on each wrist/ arm. This does not mean that you cannot do layering. In fact, it is encouraged. It's just more a case of realizing what the limit should be for the ensemble. Always pick the one focal piece of jewelry so that you can use process of elimination to weed out the unnecessary elements.

The next major focus is the material. This can be interpreted two ways and you must pay attention to both: 1. the metals and gems of the jewelry and; 2. the fabric you're wearing. Some metals and designs are much heavier than others. They can rip right through fragile fabrics. On the other hand, the heavier chains and pendants and such are excellent for thick fabrics like denim. Incompatible materials lead to trouble. Everything you choose should emphasize your fashion goals, not clash. Elegance or casual?

Also, consider what colors are the gemstones in the materials. This leads us directly into our next focal point for the fashion savvy. Neutral colors like white and black are good for anything- think white, oxidized, or black diamonds. On the other hand, very color specific gems like smoky quartz, amber, turquoise, and emerald need to match the color palette of your outfit otherwise they'll look very out of place. Too many colors and clashing styles will be noisy (refer to the first tip about there being just too darn much).

The last major thing you can focus on and quickly is the size. If you overdo the oversized accessories you'll start looking like a munchkin that belongs in the Land of Oz. If you go with oversized sunglasses, try and balance the proportions of the rings, bangles, and earrings. Items that are too minimalistic—have at least one piece that draw attention and stands out. Also, consider your build. Huge cocktail rings on a tiny hand may be interesting but maybe a simple silver band ring will look nicer. Use your better judgment when you try on different combinations.
