Most workers cringe at the thought of any type of corporate function, whether it be the company picnic or the Christmas party. Some people just don't enjoy spending more time than necessary with their coworkers. Granted you do spend at least forty hours a week with them, but sometimes you'd be surprised at the positive effects of spending time outside a work environment. Picnics and parties are all well and good, but perhaps a weekend retreat is just what the company needs to boost morale -although it can probably be argued the exact opposite may happen for some.
It's easy to see why employees don't always enjoy hanging out in a park eating hamburgers and participating in three-legged races. It's not the most thrilling of ways to spend a Saturday afternoon in the summer heat. Business retreats offer a chance to completely get away from the corporate world. The farther you can go, the better. Go upstate, out to the woodsy area of Pennsylvania, or the mountains of Vermont. Gather your team on a charter bus and get them out of the state if you can. This will make them feel like it's a vacation from both work and their family. How can they say no to that? Providing a charter bus will also make them more willing because they don't have to dread finding their own transportation. Imagine how you would feel if you had to pay for a corporate retreat? Not much of a retreat if you ask me!
Once the charter bus is booked, think about fun activities for the group. We can all expect some of those "team builder" workshops; it's inevitable. But you can choose to pick ones that aren't so dreadful and cheesy. Put yourself in their position, would you find this activity fun or a waste of time? You want them to walk away feeling good about their coworkers, their company, and themselves.
Remember to give them time to themselves. Let them do some skiing or take a dip in the lake, depending on the season. No one wants to feel like they're trapped at work but in the woods of PA. It will feel far worse knowing you have the opportunity to have fun but you cannot. With the right planning and activities, employees can see each other in a completely different environment that will make them feel more comfortable with one another. They will be given a chance to finally discuss something other than TPS reports with each other as well.
Find charter bus services that can take you far and away from the office and into a new dynamic that will create that comfort and rapport you seek with your workers.
