The actual job of a Chief Financial Officer has long eluded even those companies that employ one. Shrouded in mystery, the CFO does his or her work behind closed doors. While you may not realize it, their job is visible in every single facet of day to day operations of a business.

First of all, a chief financial officer is the senior person in charge of the business financial management of a company or corporation. This means they're in charge of all accounting that happens in the company whether it is preparing budgets, acquiring another business, or even performing auditing duties for the company.

This means that everything from the light bulbs you use to see in your office to the mop you use to clean up on aisle three, have to first be budgeted and approved by the chief financial officer. Each little facet of your overhead of your business has to come from someone.

As a matter of fact, look around you at the merchandise on your shelves. The chief financial officer has studied, analyzed, and reported on trends in that field. They've worked in the field and studied how to possibly expand your business through marketing etc. They basically need to have their hands in every part of your business to make it run smoothly.

The qualifications for such a job vary but a lot of the jobs out there today require at least a Masters Degree in accounting, finance, or business. They also ask that you be a certified public accountant (or CPA.) Being designated as a CPA ensures that you are in fact knowledgeable about financial management solutions and able to do this job. If you haven't had at least eight to ten years in a senior role as a chief financial officer or a high management financial officer, you probably will be passed over for someone with more experience. You need to have great communication skills, like writing and interpersonal speaking skills.

This job is not easy and not everyone can do it. It requires a lot of work, a lot of analytical thinking, and great math skills. It's not for everyone and if you're a small business trying to tackle it on your own, chances are you're going to have a lot of trouble. If this is the case, there's always the option of hiring an outsourced CFO to help you with the gargantuan task of running the financial side of your business.

The Mariner Group LLC provides outsourced financial management and CFO solutions for your business. They'll help you reach your goals when you need to, at the right cost.
