One aspect that makes digital SLR cameras superior to the standard point and shoot is the ability to change camera lenses. No two shots will ever be alike. Each situation and scenario will be different, so why would you want to use the same lenses over and over again? It's not going to give you the quality nor the effect you desire. Let's go over the basics of camera lenses and when to use each one.

Most people assume that a wide-angle lens is ideal for landscape shots. Although this is actually true, the wide-angle lens is a bit more versatile than you might think. The lens will ultimately push back the background while pulling close objects even closer. So in essence, this lens is actually great for taking close-up shots as opposed to just vast landscape. It's a versatile lens that can focus on both the foreground and the background at the same time.

If you have a distinct, focused subject, you'll want to shy away from the wide-angle and instead consider zoom and telephoto lenses. A zoom lens allows the photographer to shorten the focal length to either increase or decrease the magnification of the subject. But don't be fooled by digital zoom. You want to use an optical zoom lens which will actually magnify the image. A telephoto lens is fairly similar to a zoom and the difference is subtle. While a zoom lens magnifies, a telephoto brings the subject closer, reducing the distance between the objects in the photo and the lens. This means there will be greater detail.

Looking to zoom in on teeny tiny objects? Then a macro lens is for you. They have a short focal length that will allow you to take a picture up closer and personal without any distortion. Most digital cameras already come with a macro setting which can achieve the same goal. Macro lenses are best when used on objects that are already small like a flower petal or a drop of water.

Fisheye lenses have become a popular choice among photographers, creating an interesting curve to photos. The lens was originally developed for astronomy photographers that needed to caputre a wide range of the sky. Now they are popular among landscape photographers since they can distort horizon curves. When photographing people, it will give the appearance of looking through a door's peephole.

Although you might focus on one type of photography, owning multiple types of camera lenses will give you an advantage, allowing you to become much more versatile in your photographs.
